I CALL HIM MEDIUM/SM. HE CANNOT BE MISTAKEN FOR A HEN CAN HE? I'M TALKIN ABOUT THE ONES THAT ARE SMALLER THAN THE AVERAGE HEN.

Keith i'll add one thing to your post.Your best cock bird must be bred from healthy parents and therefore won't be to small.I think sometimes we breed smaller birds because the parents or the young weren't healthy from the get go!In these circumstances you get smaller than average birds.I don't care for them because they'll never be as good as the real healthy ones.

Depends,
I have seen alot of the Jac. strain of rollers that were on the smaller soze ( cock ) compaired to other strains of rollers... Depends on who is breeding them, and what they come from.

Here's where I'll have to disagree...because I think that there is no such thing as too small..
If you want speed, the smaller size will be more capable of producing it. I mean small and MIGHTY...not some runt..!! I've seen a couple of Steves' birds that are like what I'm talking about.
But even though I have always felt this way, I haven't made much progress in this direction, because IN PRACTICE I choose for the overall bird and size is just one of many characteristics I choose for.

You said it Paul "overall size"!For the most part we'll always choose the proper sized bird over the smaller one. There are many who are the proper size and who can spin like hell! Why breed for less than the ideal size?

Smoke,
When I had the Roe birds they were small and the even got smaller when I raised them. 0111F the blur hen is a small bird but she is a hen. Richard Miller got one of Joe Roes top producing cock bird that was mistaken as a hen.
My hens were 5oz and some got to be 5 1/2 ounces. The cock ran anywhere from 6 to 6 1/2 ounces.
When Don Ouellette and Joe Marlett visited my loft Don made the comment that I had parakeets instead of rollers. And When Monty came to my loft he said they were too small. I never listened until it was too late. I ruined a bunch of good birds because they were to small. The hens couldn't hatch there own eggs because they were to small and I guess they couldn't cover the eggs good enough. They couldn't handle the wind very well but they had the illusion of being very fast. But like Monty said they were just too small.

DO YOU GUYS AGREE THAT SMALL BIRDS MAY NOT BE ABLE TO HOLD UP IN SOME ELEMENTS, SAY LIKE WIND?

WHAT DO THINK CSRA,RO,JMHD, AND ALL THE OTHERS THAT FLY IN THE HIGH DESSERT? YOU GUYS DEAL WITH THIS.

I think i understood Paul. You say that the smaller bird will produce more speed and that may be, but i think its important to breed to specific standard size and not stray from that.Like i said before i don't care for birds that are to small. If you have some good ones that are small they should be bred to bigger birds to improve the size of the offspring.Just my preference and some will surely not agree.Like most everything else it's a matter of what you like.
