That is the same type Hawk that eats my rollers here in Mich. I studied up on it and thought it was a "Sharp Shin" not a coopers.I have read that they are almost impossible to tell apart. The Coopers are a bit larger than the Sharpie. Even experienced bird watchers can not tell the Diff.I have read that in tite areas between trees nothing can out fly a Sharpie. He picks off my young birds alot & often. They are supposed to be migratory birds !! so when do they migrate?? they have been here all winter. I have lost 18 sense May, next year I plan to raise more to offset my losses.

Hey Roll Down, well, before you start doing anything to violate the Migratory Bird Treaty Act which is an international treaty, you should be sure your pigeons are the type of livestock that you can protect by destroying a bop or trapping and relocating without a permit or anything.
Allot of people paid heavy fines for their ignorance, would hate to see you make the same mistake at this point when everyone should be very aware of the ramifications of making public statements that could be used against you in a court of law.
The Audobon Society has a screen capture on its website of a web page from this site of statements/posts made on this site by guys who were involved in Operation High Roller who should have known better. ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Hey Pat66, It looks like we have the same fly schedule due to the BOP.
My lock down begins in Mid September thru Mid May.
I'm tired of feeding those D@#* Hawks/Falcons. I'd like to see one choke on the leg band!
Remember to wait until the leaves come out on the trees, then you can fly the kits.
This way I "only loose" 1 to 3 every fly day and not more. They (BOP) play rough around here in my area.
Regards, Bill from NJ

Hifly11, I also thought it was a Sharpie. The Coops around my area tend to be a little smaller and more of a darker brown color. You are correct that Rollers will not out fly a Sharpie that is after them!
*Did some research and that is definitely a Cooper.*

Tony: I have been doing some checking and you are absolutely right on with your advice. I would suggest everyone who flies birds read about "Operation High Roller." I believe that most of us who love rollers are also bird lovers in general and it is only out of extreme frustration that any one would even consider harming any B.O.P. One of the nice things about this web-site is the knowledge and ideas that are freely shared to help each other in the hobby and hopefully, maybe right here, someone will come up with a B.O.P. solution that will keep everyone happy.

Hey guys, What about, making a spray out of cayenne pepper and garlic and spray down a bird to see the effect it has, Will not hurt B.O.P. and might teach it that our birds just dont taste that good! WHO knows they might like it and learn to BBQ ---------- Pat

I have a good friend here in mich. he has a small coop and only keeps six to eight Rollers. One day he went out to feed them and he saw the pen rocking, got closer and saw a large red tail in the coop eating lunch, (couple of Rollers). So he opened the pen and let him out. This has happened three times now, he gets in through the trap. And my friend lets him out each time. He only has three left, I told him I would give some more birds. He is a true Bird lover, as most pigeon men are.

Another friend of mine wanted to get his kids some pets, so he decided on Pigeons for them. He got a pair of fantails and two pair of rollers. One day a fantail got out and was sitting on the coup when a hawk swooped down and carried him off. The childern were defestated and cried , as they saw the whole thing. So he decided to not fly rollers and gave them to me. He bought some parlor rollers. After a few months the kids wanted to see one roll on the ground. So he got one out and it flew up into a small tree. Yep you guessed it and while the kids watched the BOP carried there pet off into the woods never to be seen again. Now I can just imagine what would happen if the BOP's carried my neighbors small dog off and ate it. If BOP's ate dogs, people would not stand for it.I love my birds just as dog lovers love their dogs. I have had Pigeons on and off sence 1961, I raced homers in the seventies with the east side club near Detroit. I have never seen Hawks eating pigeons as they are today. Does anyone have the answer as to why??? is it the fird feeders bringing them in??? or does nature just have an inbalance??? Does anyone know what can be done to slow down the carnage? Sorry about the long post, but Iam frustrated.

Adult coopers due to coloration of the eyes....juveniles have yellow eyes and less noticeable barring in the chest plumage.Looks to be a female but the size is hard to judge from a pic.Sharpshinned are quite a bit smaller on average. ---------- Ron Borderline lofts

Hifly11, I lived in Cleveland,Oh. back in the 70's thru 90's and raced too. We NEVER had a problem with the BOP. But,back then their wasn't SO MANY of them around either. Their flying pattern didn't attract the attention of the BOP, unlike the Roller's pattern. It's as if the roller looks like a bird in distress, which is VERY attractive to the BOP. I wouldn't say their is and inbalance. I would say their is an inbalance of JUSTICE. Too many bird RIGHTS... One way to help cut back on the ATTACKS is LOCKDOWN your birds or stagger the times and the days that you fly them. I happen to practice BOTH....LOL Hope this sheds alittle light for you. ---------- Fly High and Roll On Paul

Thanks for the info Paul, I will be more careful next year.Iam looking for a little relief next spring as my neighbor moved away. Last year he had 18 bird feeders in his back yard not far from my Pigeon coop.So that was like fast food for BOP's. they would just come over and eat (doves and anything else at the feeder) when ever they were hungry.

The truth of the matter is that the Audubon Society and the Fish and Wildlife Department are sill living in the 80's. Falcons and Hawks are the endangered species poster children. They will not accept the fact that the pendulum has swung too far in favor of the BOP. I suspect that in a couple of years we may even hear them say "you guys were right" off the record off course LOL. Doing some research on the subject the favorite food, and most commonly eaten bird is "rock dove". I just with we could get the figures on how many of the "rock doves" were banded.

When they are hungry they can become very bold. Even to the point were they will enter your loft tru the bobbs and start eating away.
