I like to fly my birds right before dark. I don't get hit by BOP at that time for some reason. Does anyone experience the same thing or is it just down in Fl.

For the last 3 weeks I have flown almost every day an hour befor dark, except when raining and I have had no trouble from the BOP. I'm in southwest Georgia and the BOP are here in full force, all the Plantation and hunting preserve guys are losing lots of quail to them. I'm new but have learned quickly that if I fly later than 8 AM or earlier than 4 PM the BOPs will make a run at my birds,

I have never had the balls to.
But I here that it can be done.
IM always afraid of that dreaded overfly.
That is worse then any BOP attack you can have.

Early on I was told by Don B. don't fly what you can't afford to lose. I don't think I would take a chance with a kit of Rubys that I hope to raise soon, but I was given 8 young birds with no info on their families and those are the birds I am flying now, OJT so to speak in feed management before I have some birds with really good history. I have wondered about exposing them to Owls by flying late afternoon, they are as bad here as any of the daytime preds. I have bantams an have to be real careful not to let one roost in a tree, he won't be there in the morning. Have any of you lost rollers to Owls? Weather probably has a lot to do with it also, the winds here usually lay down late afternoon.

I`ve been flying an hour or two before dark here in Indiana. Done real well so far. That is until this week. Dang BOP figured me out and came in 3 days this last 5 times flying. I did lose 1 bird but didnt see him get it so I`m not sure if he got it or just spooked it off and it got lost. I`m hoping he left hungry every time. Better yet I wont be flying again for a while now. If his survival is depending on eating my birds and my hard work, that sucker is out of luck.

When I first started flying I flew kits late. I quite that as I had a coppers keep a kit up after dark. Lost some got most back the next day. I have learned not to fly with less than 2 hrs before dark. It's hard watching a kit that won't land stay up till you have to give up and go in the house. And worry all night about them! To much time in them to put them up late and take that one chance. Just when you think it's safe BAM!!!!!

There is no time for the BOP not to eat it's just luck. They eat 1-2 birds a day if they can if they have chicks even more. I first got lucky flying in the morning around 7:00 Am not getting hit at all, then the falcon found out and kept coming in the morning. I flew in the afternoon also and the same thing. This was last year when I was testing the BOP. By doing this I honestly lost most if not completely all my kit birds. The BOP is really smart I think one of the smartest birds. The same falcon one time came in and spook the whole kit making them fly every were and some dot high. He Supposedly left but I was looking at him and he sky high then coming full blast down and got one bird. I said to my self this bird is a smart one and yes she is one. This Falcon has come for the last 3-4 years and I think is the same one. I think she is a hen and is a big one the dark grey one.

This year I took some chances and lost a few but ones it got too bad I lock down. Usually I lost young birds that were spook and didn't come back.

Guys around LA to San Bernardino area know how bad it's over here and can't risk flying the birds making the BOP stay even longer here. The more we feed the BOP the happier he will be and stay even longer than what we want them too.

If you fly from a stationary kit box, the BOP will eventually figure out your schedule and be waiting for your release. Flying from a portable loft gives you a lot more leeway to fly very early or very late. Al

I fly about 4pm when I get to fly,but I am so busy with the youth wrestling right now, I only get to fly a couple evenings a week! Not one BOP in a couple of months!

I do have a snowy owl that sets out there at night though! Have to make sure they all trap in by dark!

wafer kits:
How does that work flying from portable lofts? I think it will be a lot harder to train your birds or is it the same? Do you keep them from flying high or it will not matter?

Thanks

At the time when we were decimated by the Peregrine we tried all kinds of methods, early morning/late evening/fireworks/and a good deal more desperate measures, they were effective for only a short time,as once they tuned in to your methods,it was not a deterrent to them ,the only respite we have had since 1983 is the nesting of a pair of Eagle Owls in our area for approx the last three years, since learning of them and their capabilities I have restarted in Rollers, along with three other former flyers,I now fly my rollers whenever it suits me,and in eighteen months of flying they have encountered one Peregrine attack with no loss, there is a strong ongoing debate as to the Eagle Owls residency raging on this side, but as a roller and racing fancier I can assure you no predator was ever as welcome on this Island as these Eagle Owls, and long may it continue.

I had a first time experience this morning, my son and I ran the pups and chased the quail birds before the rain started. We had been back and forth to the truck to switch the dogs out, as we were coming out to head home, Cole asked "What's that on the truck cab?" It was a Cooper, sitting on the cab, eating a quail, the dogs in the box were going nuts, but that didn't bother him at all. We were hunting with a DNR Officer so the "Lord couldn't call the sucker home!" I walked with in easy ball bat range of him before he flew off. That is bold my brothers!

Makes a preacher want to cuss!

Shine a floodlight on your kitbox if they fly after dark. Mine come down in the dark frequently. Worst I had happen is an occasional bump. I fly late because the days are so short and I get home late frequently. Even a halogen on an extension cord will do the trick. Ya don`t need anything elaborate.

Quickspin.....The training is not different than flying from your home except that you have your birds used to your truck intead of house. If they do get attacked they will go higher just like at home. YOU WILL NOT LOSE THEM as long as the weather is not turbulent (ie) heavy winds, snow blizzards etc. This is what most fanciers are afraid of. Come back the next day if you have to and they will still be there looking for the truck. I have done it hundreds of times over the years and sewldom lose a bird. Al
