I have a solid red 8 year old male roller that is acting kind of unusual. He is acting kind of, well i guess you could say drunk. He walks very wobbly and it seems like he is going to fall right over. Im not sure if it is becuase of the old age or if he is sick. He has two 5 day old babies and i'm not sure what to do. This has been happening for about 2 to 3 days now. Would anybody be able to help me with this??

Thank you very much,

Andrew

If you have a jedds close by you can take a sample of the birds Sh.. and they will analyze it and see what is wrong.

This seems that a spyder bite him for me but don't know just a guess. Make sure the bird is not light or is eating plenty of food.

Is the Sh.. hard or watery or green?

The bird is not that old I have one that is same age and is ok and a older one that is 15 years old and looks ok still.

You can email Tony here at the site and ask him for some medicine for the bird. He doesn't seem to be week or too bad. Ones they can't eat or the sh.. is watery is almost too late.

When the bird is done feeding the squeakers and the other bird is sitting on the squeakers remove him and put him on a cage by himself for around 1 hour to see if he gets better. The cage to be big so he can fly a little and see if he can fly or if he is stiff in one place only.

Kopetsa i would separate the bird and give him some 4 in 1 for about 7-10 days. After the treatment give him some bio-pro for 3 days and put him back in with his nestmate and babies.

He doesn't twist his head, and he can fly good but he doesn't fly too much right now.

I was just out in the loft and he cant fly up , he can only glide down to the floor. He is crashing into the water and food dishes and bumping into the walls.

Go to this site Chevita GmbH - Homepage click on pigeons then click on symptoms. Look up the symptoms your bird is showing and it will usually tell you what they have and what to do about it. I hope this will help you out good luck. Ron Others might want to jot this info down

Isolate the bird ir it is in the same loft as the other birds as the illness will spread to the other birds .

Foster the young or hand feed them.

Contact tony for some medicine , but please as a precausion seperate the bird from the rest.

Last year I was getting my kit ready for the FF and I had a hen bounce off the loft. She hit so hard she wasnt able to keep her balance for a week. She stumble and sometimes fell to her side. She never gain control of her roll after that day. I now call her offsping the Drunken Line. lol

Andrew,
Two things come to mind.Since the bird is a breeder,I suspect a calcium /magnesium deficiency. It causes a crippling or lame type effect, the richness of their pigeon milk has depleted their supply.Oyster shell, pigeon grit sometimes will not restock them properly.Add a supplement called calci-mineral,also buy blocks of chalk[magnesium]from any pigeon supplier. One does not assimalate without the other,so you need both. For now stay away from liquid treatments[I will get to this later].I also suspect your bird has canker,so you will need to treat for tricho, use spartix tablets, half tab in the morning, half tab in the late afternoon for 8 to 10 days.Canker is usually from contaminated waterers,no matter how clean you get them. They also can be brought from one loft to another by poop on your shoe bottoms ,so be aware of that.Use nolvasan to disinfect your waterers and throw away vessel that is suspect,a few drops per waterer[a little goes along way], from now on until the weather changes. You can use baytil as a substitute for spartix, its broad spectrum and alittle pricey depending on where you buy, either one don't give up early on medicating. It will take 2 to 3 weeks for the tougher strains,to see a noticable improvement. The reason to stay away from treatments through the waterer ,is it's probably contaminated, and why put good medication and supplements in a vessel that is suspect.Nolvasan,is probably the best waterer disinfector, and will pass through the pigeons.
Andrew, this is something I suspect might be happening. Also, dung beetles, meal worms, other ferral pigeons, vermin can deliver sickness to your loft on a silver platter.Combine that with overcrowding and you can have the potential for some very sick pigeons.Start picking up some of your stock that might be showing signs of sickness, have a bird vet.,swab and microscope them,to see whats present, for sure its something.Isolate this bird during this, and let the other mate rear the young.Hope this helps....Aloha,Todd
