A peice of thread tied to a paper clip or saftypin, expose roughly four inchs of thread and hold the metal part just over the center of the back. Swings in a circle it's a hen, swinges in a stright line from front to back it's a cock.
Not my idea, but I'm a believer! Try it on your own wrist, or your closest female. BTW, Welcome to the site!!

Oldfart.... As long as I can remember,I always had a problem with sexing young birds... But,your paper clip thread method has "NEVER" failed me yet. I've been using it since this posted. Thanks for one of the "best" unknown tricks of the trade....LOL.

When you have had rollers for many years you can sex just by looking at them.
Try to spend more time with your birds and watch the way they behave you will soon beable to work them out.
I was told as a lad hens have flat heads , cocks rouns heads.
But this isnt 110% bcause you do get the oppiste way round.
Good look and welcome.

Hey All, I'm glad it works for you, but that method was old when I was a pup. Harrison is right though after awhile you can just tell. Until then the string works about 95% of the time for me.

My nephew & I were at Tractor Supply this past spring
and he wanted to buy some young chicks.

I went to the front desk and ask for a paper clip and found a
small piece of thread in the sting section.

The employee laughed at me and said he could tell by looking at
the darkness under their wings. I told him to pick his
& I would pick mine.

All of mine are hens ( what I wanted for eggs ) and he got
half & half and he wanted all hens.

Now he is a believer also. We went back and told them and
they said; they are usually right most of the time. LOL :))

Jerry Allen...Iam glad you tryed it out. It really does "work". And speaking of chickens, I live in Amish country here in Ohio. They can sex the day old chicks by looking at their pooper. They are able to see thex sex organ that way. But, I'll passs on that one...LOL. Good luck in the future Jerry.

What am I doing wrong???

I tried this method out and I can't seem to get it right. When I put the papper clip over the pigeons back it doesn't do anything, it just sit's there. It doesn't rock back and forth neither does it rotate in a circle. It just sits there "staight as an arrow"

JD, Try lowering the clip slightly and just behind the head, roughly 1/4" and as close to the head without hitting. Make sure you are out of the wind so there will be no false readings. If that does not work try it on a person until you get the hang of it.

JD,

Practice on a proven cock or hen.
Twirl it around 10, 15, 20 times until you find a number that
works for you. Let the paper clip slow down on its own.
Right before it stops it will start to rotate or swing on its own.

The Racing Pigeon Digest used to advertise a magnet on a string for around $15.00

Sexing young rollers, not much need in it, unless you are
trying to start an all Cock or an all Hen kit. You could also keep records
to see if a certain pair will produced more or less of a certain sex.

A specific mating may produce all cocks or all hens or half -n- half.

Homer guys try to keep them separated for training purposes.

By the time they have shown you from the kit box
that they are good enough for the stock loft, you will
be able to tell very easy. They will strut like old men
in a strip club.

I bought a magnet on a string it was yellow from an ad in the NBRC I think I pay 5 bucks back in 1999 it works like the paper clip too for male rocks back and forth ,female in circles but once in a while its wrong I had two hen come out and it read one male..but now I read them like Harrison I feel them out by looking at them long enough..if it don't rock when put on top I usually let hang around genital area bottom back..that will pick up energy and start the swing..
(ps) if its a he she it will rock forward and round ..lol...----------
