I was 9 years old and I bought some young from a man down the street. He told me they were Pensoms, he was real proud of that, needless to say it meant dittle squat to a 9 year old kid... lol About 5 months later I saw the " hole" absolutly perfect 30' or more ... you never forget. Mike

It was in my back yard, This bird was different from my other rollers I had and I did'nt understand why but she was tighter ,faster and cleaner, and those were the kind of birds I wanted.I could not get her out of my mind for many years. I happen to read winners with spinners by Grahm Dexter, one of his writings said what you see and like in the air is an illusion ,so strive for that( something to that sense) so I did and studied those type of birds ,talked to other knowledgeable breeders and compared their ideas or studies with mine and put everthing to the test. Now I am an addict of speed.LOL (velocity)

I saw my first Birmingham Roller at Elmer Smiths farm back in the early nineteen fortees. Elmer released young and old birds together. All his birds were flown nearly everyday in Oakdale, California. That first roller spinning deep realy caught my eye and i was hooked. Elmer bred and flew rollers for more than sixty years in northern California. Modesto is the largest city in the Stanislaus County and Oakdale is a suberb. Everyone that owned rollers in the Stanislaus County for many years bred and flew Elmer Smith stock. Gonzalo, Billings and Edmonds were some of the younger roller fanciers that purchased rollers from Elmer in the nineteen seventees. Elmer shipped many shipments to Los Angeles and other states in the U.S.A. for many years. Also many of Elmers rollers flew all over Modesto with barneys and ate grain at the feed mills. It was a site to behold and will never be forgotten by everyone that knew the ole time roller fancier. Ray Sanchez ole time roller breeder and flyer in 2008.

I had a tortuous shell cock bird that had a HRC band on it when I was a kid. I strayed it in as a young bird. If you held him in for three days he would come out climb to about 500-ft with the other birds and lock up into a ball for 3 to 5 seconds. Not real frequent. He would do it about 10 to 15 times in a fly. He did this year after year for me. He was as good as I have ever seen. I know thats sounds like a fish story, but its my fish story........lol

I also had two that stand out in my mind...
1) 1976 I had this PRC # ? hen tort / grizzle she was small and could ball up fast & tight and drop a good 30'

2) I picked up a pair @ black smith corner in 1981
self black cock PFA 80 p14484 and
self white hen cprc 81 339 these two through out some fine squabs, all were ash red checks and would spin like nothing I had ever seen before... perfect hole.. dropping 50'-60' deep & tight.. those were some bad birds back in the day...

saw first real spinner at about 14, raised "rollers" since 11. when 2 redwing hacthery 2 buy feed,it was a man in front trying to sell a blue check hen, back then i just wanted the "pretty" colors,so this bird really didn't interest us. (true story)the man took us to his car and put the bird on the back seat and he spun it like a parlor!lol..long story short bought the bird, spun tight 20-30 feet like a tennisballl... needless to say i was HOOKED!
flew that bird at least 4 times a day! LMAO>>>>

I guess the fastest spinner I had early on was a triangle banded red spangle that I bought from a pet shop in Santa Monica in 1962. But she was short and seldom.
Really the best bird that defined spinner to me was a bird I got from Pensom in 1965. He told me that the bird rolled like a bull....and it did..!! About 20 feet, frequent...showed the hole..(all the birds I got from Pensom showed it)..

At the loft of Graham Dexter, June/2007.
On that day I saw a break of 14 birds in a kit of 20.

I will never forget it as long as I live.

I seen my first roller at about age 12 there was a fellow on my paper route who's name was Michael Curtis I lived in La Mirada Cali at the time. I am not sure if that he may be the same Michael Curtis that has been around the rollers or not. He had homers and then Pensoms then again after 1970 I have seen some super star spinners from many back yards.
