I have an `05 cockbird. He has always been a good bird, one of those all around kitbirds. Every now and then he`ll break off with a really nice 30-40. Last 5-6 times I have flown him, he is more active, almost to the point of becoming a problem. He has gotten a lot deeper on his avegage roll, doing 30 or so more times than not. He is in one of the lines I was going to bred this season and have been considering stocking him.

Is it a sign,STOCK ME, or is it a sign of an instability creeping in? Could it be something as simple as worms or some physiological ailment? Just have been thinking WHY this sudden change? Nothing new or changed as far as feed ingredients.

Been working on getting a team together for the WC. I have flown him a little more than usual and have been working with a new feeding regimin. Friday evening I fed a full 2 cups to 20. Last evening I fed 3/4 cup and booted em out at 8:30 this morning. The kit was a little more responsive overall but this cockbird was crazy for about 15 minutes.

If he were a little younger I wouldn`t have these concerns.
Anyone?

Hey Kenny....First of all, belated Happy New Year to you and yours... To me this is kinda like one of those GUT feelings. If the birds is HITTING the rolls like you want, and are striving for, then I would consider STOCKING him. If, your curious to see if their is a PROBLEM creeking up,then I would keep flying him and observe what happens. Again,to me this would be one of those GUT feeling situations. Just my take though.

It depends on what you think a bird like that would add to your gene pool.
If you need more frequency with depth then maybe.
If you're worried that he's becoming a problem with stability issues then keep him in the kit for further evaluation.

Ken,
Since the bird is an 05 I don't think that stability is something I would worry about too much. I have had a couple birds that got deep when they were about 2 or 3 years old. If he had worms he would probably feel a little skinny. You can isolate him and give him about 1/2 eye ropper of piperazine..straight..and look for roundworms in the stool.
Also, does roll deep and low..? If so, I would keep flying him myself.. But if he shortens it up when he is low that is a good sign.
You must live in an area that is really good for flying to be putting them up at this time of year.

Paul,
I handled the bird after they landed. He feels fine, just as healthy as ever. He doesn`t ever roll low. I don`t think he has ever bumped.
I gave em some wormer, eliminate one thing for sure.
I think everything is good, just a little aprehensive I guess. I like this bird.

Hey Ken, sounds to me like he is falling apart. I once had a Ruby/Jac mix bird that I flew for 2 years out here because I needed some birds to fly in the 2006 fall fly.

This bird was deep (30-40 feet), fast, tight and consistent, just doing everything tight. I was rather pleased about how the bird was turning out.

Then last summer after 2 flying seasons, he suddenly starts to not rejoin the kit after rolling. He continues to roll deep but behaves as though he is no longer in control of the urge to roll.

He finally would get so low and afraid of performing that he would land off in the trees and not come back til the kit was landing.

I never saw the bird roll down, he wasn't sick, he just didn't have the heart to keep it together. Culled him.

Tony,
He still kits,no purposeful bad behavior. He is just slow getting back sometimes. I`ll see in the near future.
