Kopetska, I`m in northern Indiana.

Spanky, no I didn`t lose any birds. I`ve been off work, so I haD PLENTY OF TIME TO BABY THEM. lol I have a heater in the loft and Its nice and toasty in there. About 55 to 60 degrees. No problems with freezing water. We actually got more snow on top of that. It snowed for 3 days straight. About 20 inches in all.

Hey BUTCH... Iam glad our snow melted away too. Iam in Ohio right now its 62*out thier. You mentioned that you had heat in your loft. What are you using to HEAT?? I got a raditor type heater filled with OIL. NO flame...its electric. But it doesn't seem to get warm enough. Its supposed to handle the sq. footage of my loft. Any advise??

hi Windjammer Paul, Thats the same heater I use with no problems. My loft is 7ft. by 20ft. But it is pretty well sealed when all the windows and door is closed. Every weekend I open it up for most of the day to let it air out.I only run the heater when it gets below 40 degrees. I prefer to keep all the windows and the door open for fresh air but cant afford to lose these new hatchs and have water freezing. Ive got 12 banded allready with no problems.

Ray , I`m glad It`s gone too. But I just deal with it best I can. I hate being indoors too much. Can`t stand TV. Thats why I`m sittin here every night.

Sal, I`m ok with the teens but if it gets any colder than that sometimes I want to cry too, but I`m afraid the tears would freeze up. LOL Last tuesday it got down to 2 degrees here. Today it was 65. We got a saying around here, " if you dont like the weather in Indiana, stick around, It`ll change in a minute" LOL

BUTCH....this is my loft. Its 18'x21',the high wall is 10'and the low wall is 7'.I too just have the heater on when it gets below 40,but it doesn't get warm enough to keep the water from freezing, thats why I ask you.Its supposed to be good for an area of 400sq ft.,but I don't think SO....LOL. I have 4 double pane vinyl clad windows and an insulated double glass door. I just might have to take this one back and get one that HEATS more area. What do ya think??? Plus,I guess I might have to put some more insulation on the inside walls. Looks like I have a good spring job ahead for me...LOL

Photobucket

P.S. RUDY...those fix'ens in the pot looks might GOOD. What time's SUPER??

Paul, your loft is a litle more than twice the size of mine. I wish mine was 18 x 21. You might need to use 2 of them heaters. I dont have any insulation in mine, but I do have inside paneling in most of it, Just 3.2 luan panels. The high point of my ceiling is 7.5 feet. It sounds like we have the same windows, but I have 5 of them, In the warmer weather when I open it all up it is very well ventillated.

BUTCH.... Last night we had one hell'va rain & wind storm. Lost our electric for about 5 hrs., it finally came back on at 6 a.m. Looks like we caught the tail end of what you guys had their. Anyway looks like I got a lake in my back yd from all the rain. Back to the heating problem. That 2nd heater doesn't sound like bad idea..On the 10' wall side I have 2 breeding pens set up, 1-6x6 one is 6x8.They are made of 2x2 wire walls. I considered making them solid walls and putting a heater in each one. Leaving the rest of the loft non-heated, thats where the 4 kitboxes are.
Whats your take on doing that?? My inside walls don't have anything on them, all you see is the wall framing so far.I guess I really have to put some more thought into this heat situation. Life is so much FUN.....LOL Later.

Paul, it sounds like you got the loft set up in a way that it would be easy to split it in half to cut heating costs and yet still be functional for you. Myself, I hate having to heat the loft because of the expence, so in that aspect I`m glad it isn`t any larger than it is. But If it was the size of yours, I think I would consider at least putting up a good heavy plastic to minimize the space I need to heat.
Take the plastic back up in the spring and carry on as usual. Maybe even a partician wall covered in chicken wire, attach the plastic permanent at the ceiling and let it drape down in the fall, then roll it back up and secure it to the ceiling until spring so you dont have to buy more next year. Good luck either way Paul.

I use a heater tray for the waterer and the water don't freez. It works with a thermostat and when it gets bellow 38 degrees, it turns on. Get one from Foys. I don't breed this time of year, therefore, I don't need to heat the loft. however, I purchased a 250W Heating lamp from Home Depo ($9.00) and works great when I need it. I have it set up with a remote control Clapper (Seen on TV - $13.00) and I can turn it on and off from home without stepping outside. Try it and you will like it.

Hi Ray, I used to like the snow till I lost my leg. I tryed to go from my gararge to my barn With my 4 wheller were the tractor was with snow blower. I made it about 40ft got stuck in a big drift and had to crawl the other 40ft!!!But I also don't like weather over 75deg!! I could sell all my animals and stay indoors the rest of my life, But what fun would that be!!----------
