Hey fellas

How about you thoughts on eye color and what impact it has on the birds stability or instability. Especially the pearl eyed pigeons. What color eyes did or does your best spinner have?

Jerry the #26 family that Jack Meyers flew had yellow eyes and they perfomed very well, The majority were red selfs and red mottles. You bred and flew them in Los Angeles so you know that family well. I noticed the pedigree went back to my #183 family of mealy bars and the majority have orange eyes. They are high velosity performers too. Then my #145 blue-black checkers have orange eyes and they go back to the #514 family. Also the #119 black check had pearl eyes and they go back to the #514 family. This family is cosidered one of the best performers also. I have bred some bull eyed birds bred out of my #183 family that can perform great too. The majority of my rollers have orange and yellow eyes. But in the last ten years more pearl eyed rollers have been bred. The #272 family breed pearl, yellow and orange and are considered a great performing family. I have bred some families in the last forty or more years that are strickly pearl or orange eyed that can perform with the best. Therefore a breeder can breed different color of eyes in rollers with great results. I breed the same color of eyes together and also two different color of eyes together. The breeder has to have a reason for that of course. Many years ago my old friend Paul Beadford said you have done a good job selecting your breeders. I like to help other breeders with advice or incouragement in pairing breeders. Expecially if they purchase breeding stock from me. F.R.S.

Ray

I had made several 3/4 and 7/8's of the #26 cock. The 7/8 birds had a hard time flying up to the perches they had too much roll in them. The eyes also became almost yellow/orange almost a corn color. I got most of the white eyed birds from the Smith family that I had from Frank 3821/3807/1353 and of course muffs could always be expected mating these blood lines together. I had a son of 2564 a 119 and 514 grandson also from Frank his # was 18. A Red Checker self that was booted and white eyed that produced on a very good birds with Telstar hen I had also from Frank. These were one of the 3 pairs I started with from him.Take care Jerry

Jerry on my family I have had birds spin from the pearl and orange eyes even the bull eye.I try to cross the color of eyes when I mate them as much as possible. The stability or unstability I cant say one has more percentage than the other.

Wayne,
I guess it would be safe to say then, in your experience 100% of rolldowns are pearl eyed. At least in your loft. KGB

From my personel expierence Birds with Pearl eyes tend to be stronger and higher flyers.

I prefer orange eyed birds any time over a pearl eyed bird.

Bull eye birds I dont ever get enough to say I have actually evaluated them they are rare in my loft.

Hi George,
I think the eye thing is based around individual lofts and how a family or line is developed.. In my lofts, Pearl eye is where you find the heat. My best birds are about 90% pearl eyed. The other, they are bred from generations of blue x blue mating for the better part. Character not color, wether it be eye or feather is what really matters.. Character and the engine to roll trumps eye or feather color in my personal opinion every time!! You can breed Blue X Blue or pearl x pearl forever and keep plenty of roll and frequency if you understand this fact! Just my opinion and what I have found to be true in my own lofts,, KGB

I put my pairs together by what i see in the air ,not in their eyes. too many people put too much on the look's.some of my best spinner's are the uglyest birds i have, but they leave people talking when they come down,i dont expect to win a table show,if i enter a table show its to help out the club haveing it. I dont like bull eyes but if i get one that hapens to be the best bird that year,i will stock it.

Could happen in certain families, they may do different with different color eyes.

I like mine to have one on each side.
