I gave my breeders 4-1 and treated for worms. All appear healthy except for the loose droppings wich are normal when rearing young.
What could be the cause of some squabs not developing(growing)properly?I really like my squabs big & healthy and if they're not i always feel they won't reach their full potential.I dislike small birds!

Luis, Thats what I do. I feed my birds pellets. There are different brands depending where you live. But they tend to turn to mush and the parents can stuff the young birds with little effort. ---------- Ray

Wich is best in your opinion list.Straight pellets or a mix of pellets and grain.I heard in the beggining you have to mix it to get the birds to eat them (pellets).
Thanks for the advice.I'll try it out.

I just feed mine straight pellets. The only availble brand in my area is the kaytee bay-mor all purpose pigeon pellets. Works well for me, the breeders even look healthy and look like they are maintaining their wieght. When I fed my breeders grains and seeds I remember a few looked like they were losing wieght from feeding the squabs.
The transition from grains and seeds to straight pellets for me wasn't too much trouble. When they got hungry they ate it and adjusted pretty quick to the new food.

I recently got back into birds and was reading here where folks were giving their breeders pellets and or grain. So I introduce pellets to my birds and I did not like what I saw so I stopped. When I picked up a bird they were getting flabby real quick after only having pellets for 2-3 weeks.
In San Antonio we have very good pigeon mixes available to us. One is Vita Pep & the other is Charley Boy. I currently mix their 15% each of both brands as the Charley Boy has a ton of small grains & the Vita Pep has more larger grains, the two together are perfect. Now the birds feel much better and their droppings are not loose any more like they were when they had access to pellets.
I have four youngsters in the nest so far and they seem to be doing just fine.
When I first started out in Rollers in the early 70s my mentor always told me that Rollers need to be grain feed, never use pellets as their body needs to work at digesting their food which helps to tone their body over all, of course along with good grit and fresh water. When birds are fed pellets they just seem to go right through them.
I will stay with grain going forward, no pellets here...

LIST....My first experiences with pellets was a disaster. What a disappointment. The SMELLS and LOOSE dropping was too much to deal with, but after experimenting with several different brands,I FINALLY got what I liked from my birds. I use Nutrina Wise Gamebird Pellets. I give my flying birds and my breeders them. I had to experiment with the portions to get the right amounts , but it was well worth it. They do need more pellets then a regular mix.(I was using the 1 cup per 10 bird formular with reg mix.)Now I also mix alittle wheat/milo with the pellets. My birds seem to take to the pellets alittle better that way. And as far as the youngsters are concerned. Hands down with the pellets. My youngsters fed by parents on pellets are just about TWICE as big as the ones that didn't get fed pellets. Thier crops are ALWAYS full. And as far as the SMELL,I don't really notice any difference, mainly I keep a well ventialted loft all year long. I guess it a matter of personnel PREFERENCE with the feeds. some swear by them, some hate them. Just my opinion though.

Cafeteria feed 'em.Wheat, corn, milo, peas, safflower and pigeon pellets. They eat the corn, pellets and wheat the slowest in that order.Only have to add feed about once a week as the feeder holds almost half a gallon of each grain. If you build it properly it never gets crap in it,only a few feathers and dander shake it out into the chicken run twice a year. ---------- Kel.
