Is the grass always greener on the other side, when it comes to someone else’s family of birds? What makes someone constantly change families? Or constantly buy birds to bring back to their loft?

i think it mostly has to do with impatience and the innability to manage your birds wich in turn makes these folks turn to other birds with the idea that they will accomplish their goals.
Bottom line be patient.Learn your birds and be wise when pairing.
If we pay attention everyday we become wiser and in return more able in all aspects of life. Not just in raising rollers!

The question is what the hobbist choose's and respect there decision. There is levels of quality of rollers, they are not all the same. Some buy and change frequently of families of birds just to try and run in the shadow of the fame , but it is us who have to do the breeding, to show the talent of our breeding of what ever we chose. Some buy families because of there past history and believe it's the best.(false) It is all about the birds !!!!!! Luis I agree with you !!! R-LUNA

Bill Pensom would send for rollers from others of repute just to see what the other guy was doing. He did this a lot. You never know why someone is doing something unless you ask. There was a fellow that I knew in the CRS that had birds for 35 years and they hardly performed. I thought he was nuts but he loved them. You really never know. Just ask the guy. There is a fellow that Richard Luna and I know very well and he changed families a few times. When Richard found out the true story he was shocked! The guy had his birds stolen and he did not tell anyone what really happened. Richard, I think you remember this one.

132.....I think that if a man doesn't have a clear picture of what he is looking for in birds, this might make him make frequent changes or additions. Their are probably many unknows here to deal with first of all. I do know from personel experience I got to see fanciers birds in my area, but they all flew basically the same. So,I NEVER really saw any very DEEP spinners. As time went on I got to see and read about the birds from around the country. I could REALLY see the difference in the families. And also see what different types of preformance birds were available to choose from. ---------- Fly High and Roll On Paul

R-LUNA, I understand that its their choice and do respect their decision. I know a person just like the one I mentioned, the guy would start over again with a new family every two years. I never asked why because I didn’t want to heart his feelings. It might just be what Luis and Paul posted, never gave it much thought, good post Luis and Paul.

Guys,
The grass my not be greener but if it helps that person improve then so be it. I thought the whole idea of this sport/hobby was to improve because if you don't improve or at least try you become stagnet. There are some guys in this thread that fly some hell of birds on a regular basis but they are always looking to improve and make things better.I'm sure if they saw something that they really liked or some thing that they thouhgt they could use they wouldn't have a problem getting it. I don't see changing birds every two years because you don't give yourself the time to learn the birds. Then on the other hand none of us knows how much time we have left in our hour glass.Personally I'm trying to reach my goals in the shortest time possible because I my not have 5,10 or 15 years to try and get there. I think my biggest question is why do others worried about what goes on in anothers mans yard? I look at this this hobby /sport just as I do my job. There are some old timers that are great and then there are some youngsters that come in eager to learn and do very well. Just because a person has 10,20,30 or 40 years doesn't mean that they really know everything or that they are really good at what they do.

Management styles and families are a mix and match deal. Some families require a lot of tweaking and some don`t. Some guys have the time to devote to these families and usually get a good payout. Some guys are lucky to have time to let a kit out during the week and fly the crap out of thier birds on the weekend. Different families react differently to all types of tings and climates. Personally I think if you work a line for 4-5 years and cant improve on your stock of birds,it is time to look for another family. On the other hand, one should have an idea what he is looking for, if he doesn`t know he has to get a lot of lines and work thru them. There are reasons not all of them valid except for inexperience. ---------- V99

No affiance taken R-Luna, You’re right, it’s his birds and he can do what he wants with them, it’s just sad to see someone go to extremes.

Luis ,,,,,I understand what you are talking about,It would be nice if those persons would show some dedication to those birds first,,, breeding and flying them instead of buying others birds and changing them shortly, whenin some circumstances they had better or even equvilent to what they have had,or the next batch they buy or get.I JUST DONT GET IT EITHER!!!LOL Yes I know that it is their bussiness and money .I'll guess that that's what keeps them happy or they need that next andrenalin rush. They should really do some research and study on familiy lines or the breeders they are interested in first. R-LUNA

LaRon and Sal:
From my perspective if these constant changes come from lack of knowledge than it is up to the wiser men to show them the correct route. Also there are those who don't listen to advice and only they will suffer the consequences!

Luis - This may be the case in this instance but there are some many variables that a person really does not know unless the speak with the individual. I here people all of the time talk about so and so changed families etc never asking the individual. However, I agree with you in your case.

I have to agree with R-Luna, what can a person learn about someone’s family in just two sessions. There had to be something he liked about the birds, it cant just be the fame behind the name? What makes it mind-boggling to me is these families were from fanciers that placed in the top ten in the fall fly or world cup.Dedication and patient are the key words here, just my opinion.
