I have a wire front on mine and an open back into the loft as it is too hot in South Texas to lock them up in a dark/hot box. I have had no problems with kitting or performance in the past. When the birds are released they are excited if it is from a completely dark box or one that is more open. JMHO

bigwilly.........the only time my kitboxes are dark is at NIGHT. I've experimented with this question afew times when I first got started with Rollers, with NEVER any difference. I got the same preformance from my birds, REGUARDLESS. ---------- Fly High and Roll On Paul

It keeps them calm while in the box and reduces the impulse to breed.

You guys are all correct the old timers in England used to keep the pigeons in the dark to stop them from moving around hence saving energy so the pigeons could put 100% effort into a fly. Also like Keith says stop them from pairing up and fighting amongst the cock birds. But in my opinion both dark and light kit boxes are little difference but remember if keeping pigeons in the dark make sure they get a vitamin D supplement because pigeons get vitamin D from natural sunlight.

I always thought the reason for blacking out a kit box was to get more out of the birds upon release. Its just like when somebody turns the light on in the morning and you cover your eyes because its so bright and it takes you some time to adjust to the light. Its the same with rollers, except they are having to adjust there eyesight in the air, therefore they will come out more active but this will soon slow down once there eyesight has adjusted to the light. Anyone ever try this ? I do like to leave light for my birds as well. I think it is healthier for the birds and helps keep your kit box better ventilated. I am able to cover the fronts of my box up in bad weather, but I rarely cover the fronts. ---------- Ray

Ray, I actualy crack my kit box before I release so my birds eyes can already be ajusted to the light. I want my birds to out calm and aware of what is going on and to focus on the task at hand. I dont want no pre-excitement going on. BUT I ONLY DO THIS ON FLY DAY!!!

Keith, I will black out the box the night before, but I try to let the birds adjust there eyesight before I let them out as well. I hate surprises...lol, and I try to let them out just a few at a time so they will not get to excited upon release, then allow them get to a good hight to call time in. ---------- Ray
