How did you discover rollers and get into them?

My father started me off as he raised rollers so I grew up with them. He is almost eighty now but looks great!

My father got us hooked. He took us to a pet store on Florence and Alameda and we saw some rollers and he explained how they rolled in the air and would come back. We couldn't beleive it, so we got them and have been hooked since then.

It all started back in 1973 I was in the 3rd grade, living in south central Los Angeles a place called Watts.
Keeping pigeons kept me off the bad streets of L.A.
My uncle Frank built the cage and my brother and I stocked it.. When mom went to the market, it was pigeon catching us and caught our first birds.. Yes... I had Commies...and loved them..
We up-graded to rollers and had very good success.
we also shopped @ Boon's and Red Wing (Alameda / Florance)
just before christmas I stoped in with my kids.. thay still have all the differnt kinds of birds and stuff.

Every kid in our neighborhood had pigeons of some kind or anouther back in the 60s and 70s. A few had rollers that were kept and flown in the same loft as any other pigeon we could find.

Gosh I wonder now how good some of those birds really were or could of been, had any of us really known what to do with them.

After being out of the racing hobby for many years I got the calling AGAIN. But,I didn't want the same race birds. I wanted something different. I started surfen the net. Got hooked up with J_Star back in 2004. He invited me to a fly here in Ohio. That summer I got HOOKED. A few months later I built my first kitbox and was fortunate to get a kit of Hardesty/Roe birds from Rick Szempias and the rest is history.
