Okay this topic is probably gona get ridden into the ground....LOL. Question: You guys that use individual breeding pens. When do you let the birds free loft? After both eggs are laid? After the first egg hatches?? Or do you keep them locked up the entire breeding season? This will be my first breeding season using them, thats why Iam asking. I use to use an OPEN loft breeding system with the racers.

I'd wait till after both eggs are laid! The hen is already fertile, but after the second egg is laid, they start setting continuously and don't leave the nest unattended! Don't have to worry about other prs messing with the eggs and stealing the nest! ---------- Val

Paul, The setup I have I am unable to free loft them. Even if I could I wouldn't, just to be sure of parentage. I think that if you keep them locked up it is important that the pen is of sufficient size. I had 30w x 24d x 24h pens last year but I didn't like seeing the birds locked up in something that size for a long time. This year I expanded them to 5'w x 2'd x 2'h. Hopefully the birds will be happier.:) ---------- Aloha, Dexter

Paul, I keep them locked up till they are on eggs. Then when the squabs are starting to pin about the time you band them I lock them up again till the second set of eggs arrive. I also free loft one pair at a time. Just let out a differnt pair everyday in rotation. ---------- Ron Borderline lofts

I use indie pens. In a year or two I will go with an open loft and one line. 2:1 foster ratio normally, this season with fewer pairs in the breeder pen I will go 3:1. ---------- V99

Aloha Luis, I really hope the birds like it and show their appreciation by breeding me some "smokers". LOL Being technicaly handicapped I'm not able to post any pictures (yet), and anyways the pens are simple all wire pens I made out of 1"X1" welded wire. I was supposed to build some permanent breeding pens in the off season but........... Hopefully I'll get it done this year sometime. ---------- Aloha, Dexter
