ive been in this hobby a long time and one thing i notice is most coversations revolve around the people who have won something ,as in worldcup, fallfly, local club flys ect, these are the ones who recive all the credit for there acomplishments and i belive they should becuse it's a great thing to compete and come out on top ,but i think we fail to realize there are some great people that never win but go out of there way to keep this thing going in the right direction, who do you think has made the greatest contribution thats never talked about?

I would not give credit to everyone who breeds birmingham rollers because there are a lot of feather merchants out there, umm the credit should go to those who either dedicate themselves to the competition(because they preserve the hobby in some sort of weird way) and those who recruit and help out starters of all ages(to keep freshblood kept coming in) ---------- Nrhoua (Doua) Xiong 4581 25th ave. sacramento C.A. 95820 http://freewebs.com/parlorrollers

First of all I like to give credit to god for letting me see another year to enjoy my birds. Thats a blessing by itself growing up in Watts.
I like to give credit to CS for all the birds he use to give me and my cousin when we were kids. Showed me how to seperate my breeders and kit birds. When I was a kid he tooked me to my first fly and show.
Last but not least I like to give credit to Keith London. Since I been in ICRC Keith been schooling me on alot of little things. I would like to thank him for that. He suppose to take me under his wing. You must of forgot Keith LOL!!!!
I like to give credit to all the great roller people out there and all my club members (ICRC). Great topic broadwaystar

If I had to step up and give credit to one man in this hobby that put the hobby and the preservation of the hobby obove anything else it would have to be Rex Clark. Rex passed away a few years ago but Prior to his passing he never mised a WC or a FF or a local fly, Rex was always the one helping put on the club and national events and always the last one there cleaning them up. He was always the one picking up and dropping off the kids and starting them off with birds to fly and even giving them bands and medications when needed. He is the most prominant founding member of the NCRC and I feel even though the club goes on without him it will never be the same without him. Generosity was his middle name. I'll give credit to my pal Kevin Vue, for helping me get into rollers. I used to raise my birds at his house, and it was awesome. I would just walk with him home after school and let our birds fly. And Brain Mccromick, Dwight, Johonny Smith, and Ryvon Hall for helping me start my very own family.

Hey all, I'm sure most will not know of this man, he was reserved, quiet, unassuming. Never turned a youngster away, always willing to sit and talk rollers. Flew some great kits. Started many a boy on the right path, gave birds to those who first earned them. Sometimes even found jobs for those who could not afford feed for their own. Never a hand out, but thinking back, probably made up chores, so they, (I) would not feel like I was begging. Sometimes a boy will get lucky, I did. His name, William Berry, Bill.

two people that come to mind for myself (besides my father) would be Steve Moore who I believe currently lives in north dakota(?). He was with the San Diego Spinners when he lived in chula vista. The other person would be Juan Navarro without a doubt. He is a major asset to the roller hobby and a generous rollerman. ---------- Gary

I would have to say Kenny Billings is one of those people who goes out of there way to help others in this sport even though he does do good in the flys he has helped me out so much if he never helped me I dont know if I would even have more than a 4 bird kit and I would still have the color bred rollers I bought from a guy for $5 so if he never helped me out I dont think I would even be on this chat talking to every one on here so THANK YOU Kenny Blillings you are Duh Man

I haven't been at this long, less than a year, Sam Pate who had the first rollers I ever saw, got bit by the Roller Bug, Nick Siders, who was gracious enough to fly his birds for me, Prof. Doucet, Thom, Val, Tony and Joni, Don Bowen the list could go on and on. Thanks to All Y'all for your encouragment and willing spirit to help a newbie get started right and stay pointed in the right direction, and for answering my unending questions! ---------- "Semper Fi" SD

Pat and Snake - Thanks!
For me there are many individuals that I could give some credit to as with all fanciers but first my dad and Bill Yurga and second Bruce Cooper, Bill Patrick and Herb Sparkes. They are all genuine, knowledgeable, have values and have taken a lot of time with me through these many years. You can learn something from anyone but not all are genuine in their teaching and this is what is important to me.

Being from an island with only three backyard fanciers and no roller club, finding information on flying and breeding these birds correctly was a chore. Thanks to TONY for having this site where anyone without access to veteran flyers can ask a question and get answers from knowlegable fanciers. Also, thanks to Rick Schoening for moving to this island with his wealth of knowlege and loaning me 3 cockbirds for this breeding season. :) ---------- Aloha, Dexter

This is a great thread..For me, there are 2 guys that I feel do a lot for the sport..First I would like to say a few words about a guy that is above all in my book. His name is V.L "Spike" Gilmore. Mr. Gilmore has been in the roller hobby longer than most of us have been living, and has such a great understanding and knowledge of this breed. When I wanted to restart this hobby, Spike was all ears. I contacted him, and explained my situation. He invited me over to his house, and we talked pigeons for hours. When I left I had 6 pair of birds from his breeder loft in a box headed for home, with the start of a great friendship. No matter when or where I see Spike, he is always very pleasant, and willing to answer any question. I visited him yesterday for 5 hours, and again came away with 4 pair from his breeder loft. His remark to me for why he was giving me birds from his breeder loft was " I want you to do great in the flys, so here are some great birds"... If that isnt a champion, then I have never met one!...
There is another local guy by the name of Bill Roy that has helped many people in the hobby out with excellent birds. Bill is one of those guys that doesnt always have alot to say, but when he talks, it is always useful information. Bill was another guy that helped me out when I got back into birds, and has continued to help, whether it be giving me quality birds, or sharing his vast knowledge of information. I have been to both of these gentlemens house many times, and will tell everyone who reads this post that there are no 2 better people in this hobby!...
Bill and Spike, I just want to say Thank You for being the people that you are!..Your friend, Jerry Ledford

Amen Jerry, Spike and Bill are tops in my book! The last time I was at Spike's house I was admiring a hand made wooden carrying cage, he had made for Ronnie Dyal and mentioned that I would like one. I didn't get to make it to the club meeting this month but got a call from Joe to let me know that Spike had sent one home with him for me. When I called to thank him and see what I owed for it he wouldn't take any money he just said it was for me sending out e-mails for the club.
The Guys I would have to give credit for getting me into rollers would have to be Don Oakie, Ray Sanchez and Ken Billings. Don invited me over to his house to watch his birds fly and sent me home with a box full of young birds of my own. After getting hooked on rollers I met Ray Sanchez and received my first stock birds from him. Last but not least I have gotten to know Ken Billings thru Ray and aquired some stock birds from him also. Everyone I have met in the roller fancy has turned out to be good people willing to help out a beginner. THANKS GUYS

I personaly owe a lot of guys a great deal of thanks for helping me out then and still now. but I'll start with my Uncle Willie Wright (HDRC). Heres a name in LA every one know's but since there are so many new guys they never had the privilege to meat or see the great teams of birds this man flew and I speck of the one and only Kevin McCray I personaly think he played a big roll in the South central part of La to help a lot of our great fliers know step it up to the levels there on know. This is not in any way a put down for anyone just my way of saying thanks to a great pigeon man that we now no longer have around on fly day. PS and no he's not dead just doesn't have rollers anymore. Brodway great subject.

Smoke I think he will always be one of LA all time greats when it comes to flying but you know your at the top of that list year after year proving your the one to beat thats what flying birds is about not the one year wonders of today get one hit song on the radio and years later you hear it and go I wonder what happened to him. La is my home turf (COMPTON) and I believe the capital of roll we have more guys rasing birds then anywhere in the world crazy. Like DJ Quik said how can a small city like this have such a big influence on the world. thats were we should be. lol.

Giving creditto those whohave helped promote and move forward the roller hobby who may not have won major competition flies...
I think we should acknowledge Doc Reiman and Brent Martindale for creating and implementing the 1-2-3 scoring system inplace for WC fly and FF. They didnt generate or write the rules governing the current flies but they did create the scoring system and persuaded organization leadership to use it. Brent has also done a service for the NBRC for many years, served as regional director and rarely misses a convention. He's been at it near 20 yrs serving as a leader, donating time, $ and ideas. Doc as well.
Also acknowledge Tom Monson of Utah for his historical contributions. Tom has a wealth of knowledge about pigeons and especially rollers, he is willing to share. He does it without sounding condescending or arrogant through quality writings in magazines and periodicals. He has spent most of his life serving the roller hobby.
Rick Schoening has done much to share knowledge with us here in US, through his video visits with roller greats. Rick has also been involved as leader here and has helped out numerous folks with birds and advice.
