What was it about the Birmingham roller that got you hooked?
for me it was in 1976 when I saw a PRC 74 TORT hen spin about 20' and show the hole. At that point I was hooked for life.

I got hooked back in 1985.When I lived in LA there was 6 people flying roller within a couple of blocks from each other and i would just sit in front of our apartment and watch all there birds fly. It was a great show they would put on especially when one would rolldown.I got my 1ST Bird a year later and kept it in my room until my mom found it.But i still remember those day. ---------- Jerries Loft

I was first hooked at about age six 1978, i used to spend the summers with my dad in Pacomia, ca. my uncle Clarence Booker, he and my father had a big loft in his back yard. I would clean it for them and they would let me hold birds and stuff, and trow them up to watch them join the kit, then roll, roll, roll. My mom lived in Venice Ca, and at the age of 7 i got my first roller's. there was alot of people in my neiborhood "Oak Wood" area that flew rollers. I built a loft around a door that led to a empty waterheater storge room on the side of my appartments. I would let everyone that could fly out everyday 70+ rollers and rolldowns LOL. You could say at that time i was hooked. Then came the "pigeon wars". tacking a rivial flyers bird to the telephone pole closest to his loft by the wing, bargining to get your rollers back, and protecting you cage from the "Hitters" LoL.. some classic memories.

I GOT HOOKED IN 1978 ONE OF MY FRIENDS ASKED ME IF I WANTED TO SEE HIS BROTHERS BIRDS AND I HAD NO IDEA WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT. ANYWAY, WE WENT TO HIS HOUSE AND HIS BIG BROTHER HAD A TALL SLINDER CAGE WITH PIGEONS EVERYWHERE! I SAW TOP NOTCHES, FEATHERFOOTS, EVEN A FANTAIL! TO ME THE BEAUTIFUL COLORS BLEW MY MIND! THEN!!! HE ASKED ME HAD I EVER SEEN A SUICIDE???? OF COARSE I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT, BUT HE THEW UP ABOUT TEN PIGEONS, AND THEY FLEW AROUND THEN BEFORE I KNEW IT THEY ALL STARTED ROLLING, BUT ONE OF THEM DIDN'T STOP. HE ROLLED SO FAST AND SO DEEP UNTIL HE WENT OUT OF SIGHT! IT WAS LIKE I HAD MET MICHEAL JACKSON! I HAVE BEEN HOOKED EVER SINCE!!!

I got hooked in 1978. Me and moms moved to a new house on 117th and Budlong Ave. in L.A. My neighbors had one of those "Old School" lofts in their backyard. You know the kind of lofts some of us built for ourselves when we were young. The kind of loft made out of all of the scrapwood one could find, with the milk crates inside for breeding! I was so amazed when I saw them let their birds out to fly, they would roll all the way to the ground!!! "Smack". I was amazed!! I was captivated!!! I was hooked! I remember begging my mother for about 4 years before she actually let me have my own birds. I remember I was 11 when my dad built my first cage and bought me some birds from Hills Pet N Feed in Gardena, CA. I remember moms and pops bought me 4 pedigreed rollers for $24.95 each. I bred them and got nothing but roll downs!!! Loved every minute of it. I was hooked ever since. Back then I didn't know anything about having a kit. As a kid I would let everything fly. Breeders and all! I even remember some of the names I gave my birds. Like (Chili Red, Speck, and the Dove Bird). Now that I am older and more experienced I know that "Chili Red" was a red self, Speck" was a grizzle Cock, and the Dove Bird" was a white self. I bred all of my birds together and didn;t care about color I just wanted "ROLL". Believe me after breeding like this, "ROLL" is exactly what I got. Maybe too much roll!! But hey as a kid this was my favorite hobby next to Baseball. If I was not at Baseball practice, I could definitely be found in my backyard. Isn't it a coincidence, that I can still to this very day, be found in my "Backyard"? Go figure. This is a great hobby if not the greatest. I remember once being told by a fellow fancier that the Pigeon Fancy is the 3rd largest hobby next to Stamp Collecting and Sports Memorabilia collecting. I don't know if this is still true but it sure does sound good when you tell someone who has never heard of or witnessed the Hobby. I am glad I got hooked, because now as an adult I enjoy the comraderie and the brotherhood amongst fellow fanciers. I like that I am apart of a hobby that has "No Color Lines" if you know what I mean.
Just wanted to add my 2 cents, Thanx Gator45Juice!!!

All of my friends were having them as pet, so I decided to join along with them. There's a Recreational Park right in front of my house and every month and 2 weeks, there will be a pigeon show of all kinds. Me and my friends would go there and fanciers will hand over there Cull birds to us. That's how I got hooked.

Well back in the day my grandfather had pigeons, and that’s how my dad got hooked, and than when he had me in 1985 as soon as I was out off the hospital he would take me in his loft every day so I would say that I WAS BORN INTO IT. Its in my BLOOD.

How I got hook,,This is a funny one now that i think of it...Almost all my life I use to fly tipplers ,Canadian high flyer's ,when I move to PR I call my brother ask him to please send me some high flyer's because all they have here is Racing Homers .He send me 30 but they didn't fly the 8 hours i was looking for ,some flew 3 to 4 hrs only and some bank a lot. so i was looking in the computer and came across the NBRC and join in 1999,call a fellow name Joe Marlette told him if he can help me that i was desparately looking for a high flyers that fly for 8 hours he said my rollers don't fly that long maybe 20 to 30 minutes tops..these are performing birds, I said you krazy i have birds that fly longer than that and I'm not happy,,he laugh told me about the Birmingham roller.gave me some number to call see if any of his friends can help me..no one had any to sell at the moment so i call him back and he said i will send you 8 birds and you see if you like them breed them first ,so he send them to me free of charge i pay shipping i was happy to know there were still good people like that around.when i got them i bred them gotlots of roll down ,,lol but man i was hook these birds roll.. all kind i had ,Jacs,..Pensom,,Evans..Higgins..I learn the hard way because you know what happens when you get different kind of family. especially for a newbie.Hmm that ain't easy ,,but thats how I got hook..now its in my blood ,This birds is game.... ---------- Ralph....
