IT's most likely that it lacked nesting materials,, like pine needles, twigs, or hay for the sqeak to help keep it's legs from spreading out.

Hello:

Double Band the bird and use a trash bag tie wrap to tie the legs together for about a week & the youngster should be ok. I use pine neddels & Pine shavings, works goood for me,,,,Glenn

Slip the Tie wrap around the bands and set the legs so thay are normal. Remember to double band the bird.

Aloha Gabe,
That problem sometimes occurs when there is only one squeek in the nest. Like Glenn said, just double band the squeek and tie the legs together so that the legs are back in the correct position. Then in about a week it should be ok.

you need a deeper nest bowl with lots of material or maybe put a small object next to the squeaker so he can lay up up against and his feet can't spread apart

I use the paper pulp nest bowls and almost never add nesting material. The birds would use feathers gathered from the loft floor, which helps me keep the loft cleaner. I have only had this issue once years ago, then last season I had the second. Both times it happened with only one squab in the nest. My theory is that when the parent sit on only one squab, the squab is more to one side under the sitting parent. To keep balanced, this puts the need on the sitter to put more lift pressure on the non squab side hence creating more sitting pressure on the squab side. That along with a weak hip joint in the squab causes the leg to protrude in an awkward direction. I believe that it is better not to have nesting material when there is only one squab. This will insure that the squab is in the center of the nest bowl which will put less balancing stress on the sitter. In both my cases, I did not use two bands but I did try to cure it by securing both legs together with wire. Needless to say, it did not work. I will try two bands as suggested the next time it happens. Thanks for the tip Glenn!

I had this once, as the baby got older and strong around 2 weeks or so, he pulled it back in!

This is mostly down to lack of nesting material, single youngster, with two youngsters under birds X amount of pressure/weight on them ,with one its multiplied, always leave a pot egg with a singleton

try kitty litter, I use it most of the time, the baby feet has nothing to grab on.Kitty litter keeps the smell down and absorb alot of moisture.
