I heard it said that line breeding is a time bomb and that inbreeding is an atom bomb. When building a family of birds, which of the two do you feel does a better job?

Rollerm132........I have NO idea what you are referring to when you say "Time bomb or Atom bomb" Your best bet would be to GOGGLE linebreeding and inbreeding, its a very lengthly explanation for both. I think you'll get a better understanding of these 2 technics. Hope this helps you out.

Well I know guys that bred or breed inbreeding or line breeding just for he sake of just doing that because they are close related ,or for pedigree ,,WRONG REASON. I believe that they should be bred for the right reason of bringing out the quality of that property they have,, or you want. What should be done first is to find out which bird is carrying the quality,,qualities, desired and perpetuate it from there.

When I refer to atom bomb and time bomb, it used as a metaphor, in reference to good and bad inherited traits. Inbreeding gives the person more control over time to what he locks in, where line breeding goes at a more accelerated rate, giving the person no room for error. In other words if you screw up in line breeding its more devastating, then it would be if you breed half brother to half sister.

I like to throw out a topic, from time to time just to stimulate a conversation. It’s not that I don’t know, just trying to get someone else’s opinion. Well no one can say I didn’t try.

Well,

I breed best to best...regardless of heritage. If I see a good bird and I pull it for stock...I do not even look at the band until after I decide who to pair the bird with in my Stock loft....then I look at the band...I do not want the background of the bird to cloud my decision making. The only time that I will change my mind is if..I check the band and chose to mate siblings....or Father daughter or Mother Son....Then I will find a new mate.

I have not had luck with the real tight breeding...I have had luck with Cousins, And grand parent/children maitings, as well as Aunts and Uncles.....

Anyway...when you breed best to best...it seems like the cream rises to the top and you circle the wagons around certain birds anyway.....you will find that most of the birds for stock...are coming from some main birds...
