List,
Has anybody seen the article on pigeons in sports illustrated? It's in the Jan 28 issue. The article talks about racing homers and is 5 pages long. It talks about the Vagas Race and ohter homer events. It talks about the amount of money that is spent on birds and prize money for winning races. It also talks about birs of prey,it's great to see how far pigeon have come to have a 5 page article in sports illustrated. It can also help people understand that or birds aren't just flying rats as they call them. It could also help us with the BOP problem. I fill this can also be a two edge sword. Talking about money and the amounts that are paid for birds. Money always seems to bring out the worst in people "GREED". In a normal person or our goverment.Greed makes people do strange things and it can be worst then a drug. I believe it was KGB that stated that the goverment may be watching and want some taxes from a money fly or these types of flys. Well I think a article like this can push this over the top.It also open up another can of worms "THEFT". This little word goes hand and hand with the other little word "GREED". People read that these birds are worth thousand or even hundreds of thousands of dollars and that ugly little word comes up again "GREED".Even though we all wanted our voices herd on the BOP issue and people to know that our birds aren't flying rats. I don't know if a article like this really helps our sport or opens up a whole new can of worms for us pigeon people. May dad use to always say "Be Careful Of What You Ask For Because You Might Just Get It" and "once You Get It You May Not Be Ready For It".

Theft has always been around and usually comes from within our own people! In regards to the amounts of money generated within the sport of racing pigeons i'm sure the goverment is fully aware of the situation. Now proving the income on a personal level is another thing completely! In regards to wether this article helps the hobby...i doubt it.The only people who care about pigeons are the pigeon fanciers. If WE want change WE have to fight for it!

Luis,
I know that theft has always been a part of hobby but what I'm talking about is that some people are going to read this article and say the guys next door or down the street has pigeons I wonder if he has some that are worth alot of money? Most people who aren't into the birds wouldn't know a racer from roller! I was also trying to tie into what KGB said on a post on here. There has been alot of talk about money flies, the Vegas classic and lots of money being made at shows. You don't think the feds are reading from this site, I personally don't for one minitue that we are out of the woods. I think we are still being watch. As far as proving something ,you see what they did to the about the BOPs they used what they said or what other said to prove it. Even if they don't prove a thing your life can be turned up side down trying to fight a case.I hear that Jacanette had some problems with the feds years and I don't how they proved how much he made but it still didn't stop them from ruining the man life!! I just think we need to be a little smarter about what we post on this open form, thats all.

John i agree with you 100%......watch what you write on here and talk on the phone they listening to that too.not that we have anything to hide but people have a way of twisting things around..lets us just focus on the fun we have with these birds in feeding training flying and breeding.and it keeps kids and grownups off the streets and into there backward entertaining them self ,the devil has a way of playing with free idle hands.A bird is a sign of peace ,and we all enjoyed time spending with them.. its a way of escaping this caox world for some. ---------- Ralph....

Hey All, my take is that if club activities don't run afoul of the law and some due diligence is exercised, there is no reason that properly setup and operated events have to be or need to be kept secret or fear reprisal from some government agency.
For example, should a club sponsoring events and money is involved, file as a not-for profit organization and properly handle the paperwork, etc? Would not this be the proper way to handle this?
There are thousands of civic clubs throughtout the country that play by the rules, why should roller clubs not be as responsible as the rest of these?
If you don't work with the system, you have to go underground with it and this can bring its own problems, or isn't this obvious? ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Hey gabe, that is an interesting idea...get the competitive flying of Birmingham Rollers designated as a sport by an appropriate organization.
What would that take I wonder? ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Tom Monson is a lawyer and seems to be the best at rationalizing the issues at hand. If someone knew him personally maybe they could ask him his thoughts and see if he might be interested in getting the ball rolling. ---------- Butch @ Sundance Roller Lofts
