(Moderated) I believe I read an article bt Keith London. He made a really great comment. He said that everytime we have a BOP incident, we should write in to the Fish and Game and make them aware. How would they ever know how bad the situation is if we dont make them aware of it? I thought that was a great idea. Tell me what U think. Thanks fellow roller men

Bigwilly,

I agree in concept with this idea. I would propose that an improvement be that we collect the data and summarize it in a quarterly report that indicates place, time, species, etc.

I beleive this would help our cause.

Hey Ken, what exactly is the cause? Be properly licensed to trap and relocate, thin the population, turn a blind-eye?

It does seem an appropriate and obvious action to take, i.e., to notify those designated with protecting wildlife by enforcing the rules and regulations when a lawfully protected creature has preyed on a domesticated animal, either in the air the ground or entered an open loft.

How might this information be of some value to the USFWS and what might they do with it?

Perhaps this should have been encouraged by clubs long ago and perhaps gotten the USFWS to become a partner in finding solutions rather than needing to force compliance on those few who took matters into their own hands.

Sounds like a constructive idea, needs fleshing out though??

HI ALL,

GIVING THE PROPER AUTHORITIES THIS TYPE OF INFORMATION SHOULD HELP.
BUT.........
FIRST THEY HAVE TO CARE,THEY NEED TO SEE A REASON TO PROTECT PIGEONS, AND LETS FACE IT MOST PEOPLE HAVE THE OPINION THAT PIGEONS ARE ONLY GOOD FOR POOPING AND THATS ABOUT IT.VERY ,VERY FEW PEOPLE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT ROLLERS.
LET ALONE THE FACT THAT THERE IS THOUSANDS OF US OUT THERE THAT EAT DRINK AND BREATH "ROLLERS"....THEY JUST DONT KNOW.

JUST A THOUGHT, BUT what if WE DID SOMETHING PROACTIVE ?
GET TOGETHER WITH THE NBRC TAKE SOME FUNDS AND MAKE SOME TYPE OF VIDEO, IM SURE SOME ONE COULD COME UP WITH A BETTER TITLE BUT JUST FOR AN EXAMPLE
"THE WORLD OF THE BIRMINGHAM ROLLER".
ON THIS TAPE WE GET SOME ONE TO TALK ABOUT THE HOBBY AND ALL OF THE "GOOD" THINGS THAT THE HOBBY HAS TO OFFER
THE FACT THAT IT IS A WHOLESOME ACTIVITY FOR THE FAMILY
TEACHES KIDS ABOUT ANIMAL HUSBANDRY,RESPONSIBILITY,ETC,ETC.

GET FOOTAGE OF SOME OF OUR FLYS,AND HOW EVERYBODY GETS TOGETHER, HAS FUN,AND ALL THE POSITIVE ACTIVITYS THAT ACCOMPANY THEM.
GO TO DIFFERONT FLIERS LOFTS....SHOW HOW WELL WE TREAT THESE BIRDS,ALL THE WORK THAT GOES INTO KEEPING THESE BIRDS.
SHOW THE LOVE WE ALL HAVE FOR THESE BIRDS!!!!!!
GET FOOTAGE OF THE CONVENTION AND ALL OF THE FUN EVERYONE HAD THERE...SHOW THEM HOW GENTELMEN BIDDED ON BIRDS, WON THEM AND THEN GAVE THEM TO OTHER FANCIERS, SHOWING JUST HOW MUCH WE RESPECT AND CARE ABOUT EACH OTHER.
WE HAVE SOME PEOPLE IN THIS HOBBY THAT IN HAVING BIRDS IT HAS HELPED TO GET THEM TO A BETTER PLACE IN THEIR LIVES AND HAS EVEN HELPS KEEP SOME OUT OF GETTING INTO TROUBLE.
WE GIVE THEM SOMETHING POSITIVE ABOUT OUR HOBBY.

WE HAVE TO PROVE THESE BIRDS ARE WORTH SAVING.
UNTIL THEN WE WILL NOT SEE ANY SUPPORT AND LEAVE THE DOOR OPEN FOR NEGITIVE ARTICLES TO GO UN-CHALLENGED.
IT IS TIME FOR US TO GET OUT THERE AND SAVE OUR HOBBY
NO ONE IS GOING TO DO IT FOR US.

SORRY FOR THE RAMBLING ON, I JUST WANT TO THROW MY TWO CENTS IN.
AND VERRY SORRY FOR THE "CAPS"...IM NOT YELLING, I JUST DID NOT REALIZE THE CAPS WERE ON...IM AT WORK AND I DONT HAVE THE TIME TO RE WRITE THIS LONG WINDED IDEA

THANKS,
MIKE BARRY

What positive media coverage!!!

Yesterday, my wife let our new puppy (11 weeks old) to the back yard to do her business before letting the 1 year old dog out. As my wife was opening the sliding door to let the older dog out and there a cooper swooping down with his talons stretched out within couple feet ready to snatch the puppy. As the older dog getting out of the house and noticing what is going on, chasing the cooper and growling ready to kick some ass as he always protecting his young girlfriend.

I felt so stupid since I tell the wife that coops don’t hunt animal, they are feather hunters. I was proven wrong. They are not just cunning any more, they are fearless.

Guys,

It all sound good but what we have to remember is that alot of use live in the city.If the city gets involved many wouldn't have a BOP problem because we would no longer be able to have any birds. I hate the idea of having to deal with the BOP's just as much as the next flyer. In light of what has gone on over the last couple of years I just think of it as paying taxes("AIR TAXES").

Great post john
About 95% of the lofts out there are not permitted, and more than likely would require one for the electrial, setbacks, and the size and the way most of them r constructed, also i beleive we r only allowed to keep a certain number of birds and judging from alot of post, most of us raise more than 100 young per year! Some of r birds may be considered kept in inhumane conditions, so beware of attention you draw(good or bad) it may open up a completely different can of worms!!!! So we may jus have 2 coexist with the BOP!

john,

i was sugguesting getting footage from a few lofts that would show us in a good light,im not asking for everyone to be involved in getting their loft on film, only those who care to participate.
i too live in the city so i know exactly what your talking about in respect to stiff rules.
the city should not get involved if your not partisipating.

thanks,mike.

I tend to agree with rollernuts n John.Even tho I live in the country there is still nothing I can do about the BOPs but live with them. They are part of nature and we just have to enjoy what we can with our birds when they do get to fly pred free and ya see em roll laugh it up man, enjoy, breed some more!!Try flying some other breeds and get the enjoyment you can out of them.Fish an wildlife ain't gonna help ya move wildlife around gaurenteed(sp?).
Hey J Star, good to hear from you.Sorry to hear about Mr Coop tho.Only have the peris to deal with right now here on the Rock.

i agree with the fact that fish and game is not going to rush to our rescue on the bop problem.

that being said.

what would it hurt to try and do a few positive things to put our hobby in a better light?

Hey Mike, I agree with you. But I think the traditional powers (national clubs and large roller pigeon organizations with all their committees) just don't have the desire or leadership required to take on such a proactive project.

If only I could be proven wrong!

Perhaps an association of professional roller pigeon breeders should be formed to organize such an effort as this among others??

The most serious guys and the most concentrated roller nuts are in California. That'd be the place to start to get SOMEthing done as it seems to be the most hotbed of activism in the US.That's where they started to ban 2-stroke outboards and cut back on pollution a little.I mean our tiny population of 10 roller flyers up here in BC aren't about to have any affect on Govt policy.

Mike,

I'm not saying that we shouldn't try but I'm saying whoever steps up make sure you have your i's dotted and your t's crossed because it may shed some light on you and cause more problems for you then it's worth.First of all alot of us don't have the proper size lots to keep the birds if they push the issue then you will get shut down. Second most of use are over the limit that we would be to keep if you do have the proper size lot. Third there's loft size and premit problems as well. I've read the the regs for my area and it talks about loft size, you should scrape your perches 3 times a week, and how many of use do that? Maybe if didn't work you could get one done. One interesting thing I read in the regs that really goes with the post on returning strays but I'll put it hear away. If you stray in or catch a bird that is banded with someone's name an number on it and you don't return it you can be charged with theft. If someone knows the regulations for there area and feel they are well within the regs and wants to step up that's great.

I don't think anything will be done right now because they have placed in such a bad light in the public's eyes. Then there's the fact that most people think of pigeons as flying rats anyway. There also some who will say that the BOP's are doing there job because many are introduced for this purpose to control the pigeon population but not our rollers. Most people don't know one pigeon from other. Also these animal rights people seem to have a strong backing and plenty of money to get things done. Once the BOP's start attacking people that are walking their small dogs, picking them up out of the front yard or Snatching small dogs off there leash then maybe they will do something about the BOP's.

John,

My son was hunting last year when he noticed something moving in his perifreal vision. When he turned his head to see what it was, he noticed it was a hawk coming strait at him with talons outstretched and ready. He had to wave his arms and holler at it before it realized what it was attacking and went away. He said that is NOT a good feeling to know your were about to be lunch.
