Newbie is it alright to add sunflower seeds with the shells to your mix?

my birds don;t eat sunflower seeds, but I don't know about the opened-up sunflower seeds. But I think it'll work as long as it's not too big.

hey guys i resently started giving a game cock mix to my breeders which contains sunflower seeds but they are the little black ones about the size of some pop corn. its a good oil seed for there feather.

Sal,Do they eat the whole shell?I would have thought you would have to feed them the shelled sunflower meats.Pretty expensive that way.----------

I'm fairly new also, don't really know but a pigeon has a gizzard, I don't see why black oil sunflowers would pose a problem unless they would consist of too much fat. As far as to size, the black oil sunflower seed isn't any larger than some of the field corn in some mixes. Doves here in south Georgia will flat work a sunflower field over, corn and peanuts as well, the commies will too.

They don't like the pointy parts of the shell in their crop/gizzard.Same with barley if it's not the clipped kind.Sure,they'll probably eat it if there's nothing else ,but it is harder for them to digest.
