The other topic "number of pairs" got my mind to turning. If you have hold-over birds, and dont need many young for the new season, do you still put alot of pairs together incase of the unexpected?..I see those that are posting upwards of 30 and 40 pair together... Do you not have any hold-over birds that would reduce the amount of birds that you need to breed from this year, and if so, why put so many pair together?..Just curious.

Misso, its more like preparing for the expected. The last 2 years I have had 2-3 hold overr teams going into the fly season and by the time we get to the middle of the season, I barely have a full kit. Like preparing for war in times of peace.

Jerry

There could be a number of reason why some have a lot of pairs to breed from , I will try to give you some examples.

1. Some folks cant train to FLY them so they like to breed them.

2. Moderated

3. Some actually FLY and lose a good number to the Air Sharks so they breed them.

4. Moderated

5. Some folks aint got no JOB and all the time in the World so they breed them .

6. Some Folks think you have a better chance at getting twenty good Birds if you Breed 200 hundred.

7. Some folks like to trade birds for feed and think its worth it so they breed them.

8. Moderated

9. Moderated

Of course there is more reasons but some folks keep secrets better then others so they Breed them LOL

LMAO George,
Your a funny guy..I like ya...there is tons of truth to your postings, as always!..I can see where some would breed huge numbers because of the BOP, but there are some that breed when they have 3 or 4 kits full now..I guess its a numbers game.. I have never sold a single bird, but have sent some to friends out east.. Its a good thing when someone breeds more than they need but gives them to someone who needs them..I have been the recipient of that exchange before, and was thankful that they had the extra birds to give me...Again, this post was intended for the purpose of why some breed alot of birds, and not to start a war.

I don't think you started a war but you did post a good topic as you can see by the many responses you have received. I fly in Southern Cal and the bops get more than fair share in this area. Great Topic keep um coming.

Here's 1 Jerry....

I bred 125 or so birds last year and at the end of the season had about 20 left,so i breed them! This year i'm cutting it down to 100 or less.Still evaluating but it's hard when you don't have much left to evaluate!

I put my pairs in November 2007 because I only have 8 pairs and I needed to breed 20 to have a chance to compete. This year I will have 2 kits of young birds. The first fly's will be difficult for me because my kit birds are young and will take them a minimum of 3 months to come in to the roll.

My future plan:

By the next years I will only be replacing birds in the holdover team and I will not have to breed that many. I will only breed out of ? pairs but will be the best in my loft.

The key is on holdover kit and to Lock down from October to April and you will not loose as much. 2 years ago I lost almost all my birds because I didn't lock down. Last year I lock down only my best and kept flying the rest. I did lost some birds but no more than 15 birds.

Thanks SpinZone,
Luis, I understand what you are saying. For all of the guys that live on the BOP infestated west coast, I feel for ya..I lose maybe 6 to 8 birds a year to BOP..The past 2 years I have lost my A team both years due to weather related stupidity on my part!..I currently have 2 full kits from last year, and will be adding another 2 kits of this year birds, to replace some from last year that may not cut the mustard.. I am one that keeps it very simple, fun, and as cost effective as possible. I fly my birds daily, year round, weather permitting. I have a good family of birds, and hope to continue to improve what I have..Time will tell when the scores come rolling in.

Quickspin,
Your heading in the right direction. I can tell by your posts that you are commited to what it takes.
