Mixing some drops of bleach in the water to keep the container algae free can be done from time to time with litle effect to the birds.I prefer to dunk the containers in a bleach solution for a couple of hours and rinse afterward.Putting more than a couple of drops of bleach per quart of water is probably detrimental to the health of your birds as this is a strong chemical and you'll probably damage the digestive system!

I once put some bleach on a tray that had dry pigeon droppings and in an instant, it created a very choking noxious gas, my lungs would literally not let me take another breath, I had just enough time to drop the tray open a window in the loft and get out.

I took a couple of breaths of air and ran back in to grab the tray and take it outside where I hosed it off.

We all, birds and me pulled through. Bleach is a dangerous chemical, be careful adding it to water for birds to drink.

Come to think of it, what is bleach going to do in the drinking water that a little elbow grease can't take care of?

Oh yeah, kill protozoa in the water and perhaps the birds crop. Hmmm, I think we have products for that that are much safer to use...just a thought.

Drinking only pure water up here in the great white north,I'm against using bleach in drinking water.Do you like it in your water?Maybe if you come from the city you're used to it?

Locoloft that sounds like an awful lot of bleach going through your birds. You might want to cut down on that it's not good for them.Keep in mind what bleach is intended for.Just my opinion.

Hey Kel you made a good point.I think our water supply has enough chemicals in it already!

I know a racer bird guy in town where the water is chlorinated and he leaves the birds drinking water in jugs a few days before giving it to them so the chlorine will dissipate.

I know that alot of oldtimers use to use bleach in there water. I think it was because they did not have the products that we have today. Like Tony said, there are safer products that U can use. However I do wash out the feed and water containers with bleach about once a month. Good luck budy

The American Red Cross advises to add 1/8 tsp (8 drops from an eyedropper) of household bleach per gallon of water. Mix well and allow to sit for one hour before drinking if the water is cloudy strain through clean cloths.

BE CAREFUL WITH THIS STUFF, back in the day when I was a swimming pool bum, the pool water was disinfected with chlorine, the gas infused into the water as it circulated, mixed in on the backside of the filters.

Household liquid Amonia was used to check for gas leaks, a noxious cloud will be visable when the chlorine and amonia combine.

I think that is what you experienced Tony when the amonia in the droppings mixed with the bleach.

The stuff will kill you graveyard dead if you get a good whiff, at the least it can cause chemical pneumonia, and will damage the eyes.

It won't take much at all to kill your birds.

Hey great post Roy, I swear, it happened so fast, all I could do was react by opening the window and getting out ASAP!

I knew my birds would be in trouble if I was and that is why I ran back in to take the tray out. Luckily we had a nice breeze that day and the fumes dissipated rather quickly through the window I opened.

Close call, please everyone, be careful with this stuff...

This assumes you already have healthy birds; I would use one or more of the following to help establish and maintain good health without medicating; your options are:

1) Clean pure water
2) Apple Cider Vinegar
3) ProVital Supplement

I want to commend you for actually reading and considering what everyone has offered in this thread, good question and great responses. Good luck!

OK fellas, here is the deal as I understand it. And my I start with... I am no expert on this stuff either... but I have learned from some pretty darn good pigeon men.

There is always a balance going on in our pigeons environments and especially our lofts. On one side of the equation... we have an acidic environment... and on the other... an alkaline type of environment. Being too far on either side is not good... but leaning towards the acidic side is better from a disease perspective.

Bleach is a heavy alkaline environment. It is as most people know a strong disinfectant. However, it will kill all bacteria, good and bad. Bad bacteria like cocci and other common diseases start and thrive in a basic alkaline environment, and cannot survive in a heavy acidic environments. After using the bleach in the water and killing all bacteria... and leaving a environment that iis condusive for cocci to grow and strive in is not a good idea from what I understand. This ties into why people add apple cider vinagar and other pro-bios is to produce the environment that is conducive for good freindly gut bacteria. When good gut bacteria is thriving, bad bacteria stands much less chance of taking over. Mr Adams who is the rep for Star Labs and the product specialist for Prima Lac Pro Bios can explain this much better and is qualified with the education to do it professionally (unlike me lol). If anyone is interested their contact info is easy to obtain.

Dis-infecting your water bowls on a regular basis is a good idea. Bleach works great if used correctly and rinsed thoroughly and I have used it most of my life myself too. However, a disinfectant like Nolvasan that is designed for these type applications is a much better choice.

I use bleach to clean equipment only. The problem with bleach it kills everything; the bad bacteria and the good and neccesary bacteria as well. Too much and your birds have a weakened or destroyed emune system. OR it will kill them....it is a poison. The trace amounts left on water fonts after rinseing them out is plenty. Apple cider vinager can also be used to clean equipment; it is accidic enough to clean with.

I need a spell checker, don't I?

Probotics in thier feed does wonders and there are mixtures available for the feed and that way fresh clean water is the best with some apple cider vinager now and then....put it on a regular schedule and that way you don't forget.

There is a liquid used to sanitize drinking water in your camper it kills all bacteria and is good for us to drink. And it is also good for the pigeons water.

Word of caution If you medicate your bird make sure there is NO chlorine in the water. Chlorine will nullify the medication, and it will be useless. This includes city water. If you have to use city water put it in a water jug and let it set, open, for 36 or 48 hrs. and then the chlorine will be gone, and you can then use it.
I have been using Clorax in the birds water of over 40 years with out any harm to the birds. Just when they need it, and this is when the droppings turn GREEN but only for a day or so. Less that one cap full per gallon of water. A real small amount during the hot weather and when one will be gone for several days will keep the water from turning green.

I use the bleach to clean my waterers and feeders from time to time. What I was told was to be sure to use only the real ORIGINAL BLEACH. DO NOT USE THE ULTRA BLEACH. A couple times a year I put a cap of bleach in the bath water. I know they do drink some of it so I use the probiotics after. What I`m after is to help keep off the lice and mites. I have the large concrete bird baths in my walk in fly pens for this.

Bleach chlorine any chemical is bad for you ..some town have it more stronger in there tap water tham others..if it kills bacteria imagine what it does to you or your birds..
MY birds drink purify water,,, too much chlorine in water like they have here is finding more people with cancer..it will kill the friendly bacteria. its the byproduct of the bleach that does the harm.---------- I sell purifiers here in PR and i do a lot of test on drinking tap waters and some towns here the water comes out pure yellow some orange.its unbelievable ,try drinking coffee with clorine water than drink the same coffee from purify water you can taste the difference .

Using Bleach internally,it appears to be a popular trend among racing fanciers, but as a racing fancier also, its not for me,too caustic, watch the colour of a pigeons tail feather after being exposed to bleached wooden floor,I dread to think what its capable of doing to its innards, many good safe products available, after undergoing proper field testing for same, that does the job, that those using bleach claim it does.two come to mind.Hydrogen Peroxide, and Lugosl Iodine.oh and Collidial Silver which is more expensive, but easialy the best.

Yes still look in once and while. I try to help but wonder at times.
Most all the birds gone except the almonds. Hope to raise a few this year. I just like the depth I get with them.
I did pick up few of my other family from a friend who got them from me several years ago.
Good luck to all the roller flyers this year. May the enemy all starve.
