My email is on my profile,
? #1 How large is your portable, I'm looking to fly from a small box holding about 6 birds.
? #2 Do you house your birds in a portable 24/7?
? #3 Do you have perches in the portable?
?#4 Is it possible to home mature birds to a portable or do you always begin with squeeks?
I have seen a couple of sites from France and Germany that appear to fly from small boxes but they don't seem to house the birds there, transporting and releasing from a carry box and then setting up the brightly colored trap box.

Hi S.D. 1. A box about the size of a small pigeon crate will hold 6 to 10 birds with plenty of room. 2. Mine are housed 24/7 in a larger box. If you use a small pigeon crate you may want to put them in a kit box or something where they can exercise their wings. 3. It is best to start squeeks the same age (about 4 weeks)...you could put a non-flying dropper in with them but I do not use this method. It is possible to train more mature rollers to the box by taping the flights on one wing but it is much riskier and may have losses. 4. Yes, Europeans often have very small boxes which they can carry on bicycles or even on their backs. They usually only have 3 birds or so (I think) and I don't know how high the birds fly. Some have low flying umblers which will actually follow them around asa they carry the box. Let me know if I can be of any more help. Al P.S. If you only have 6 birds in a small container and are going to transfer them to a larger box you will not need perches. If you are going to keep them in this box 24/7 I would use a little larger crate with perches.

Hi Al,
My question is how many birds do you fly per portable kit? What would be a good number of birds to start out flying portable?
Another thing you can use when homing older birds is soap instead of tape. Using a wet bar of soap or dish detergent, soap the first 4 or 5 primary flights on both wings. It makes it hard to fly and if you put enough soap on there wings they can't fly. When you want them to start flying just let them take a few baths.

SD if you are flying FOR's three is the opitimum number. I fly three or four at a time even when I have twenty five in the kit box, unless pressed for time. Since I fly mine against hawks every time I can I feel the smaller numbers are better for the birds. Less chaos when they are attacked. Any more than twelve and they are bad to split into two kits anyway. I fly my BR's in kits from six to twenty five depending on age and how many I have. And once in a blue moon I will release a hundred just to see it.

Al do you fly from the larger box or a smaller one similar to the Europeans. I am wanting to try the smaller box just so I can say I have and for schools and such. I would use FOR's because I have them and they perform best in three or four bird kits.

Robby; Currently I am flying 20 from a cage 36"x30"x30". I do not always make them all go up due to lurking predators. For a long time I flew smaller kits (11 or 12) birds from a much smaller box. Sippi; if I were flying orientals I,too, would only fly 3 at a time. Al P.S. Nice touch Robby about soaping the flights.

Al, soaping the flights wasn't my idea but it works. Best part about using soap is not messing up any feathers.

Hey Kel; I think the video Donny is referring to was put out by Don Piscowics (spelling) from Indiana. It just covers starting out with portables and is very basic but too long to post here, I believe. Al
