Hey Guys
I cleaned my lofts Sunday and at night i could hardly breath . I got a fever and I was Dizzy.
I used a mask and still got sick. I went to the Doctor today and got some chest xrays and a breathing treatment and some meds.
Guys dont ever forget to wear a mask when you clean.

Guys always protect yourself when cleaning your birds and stay away form pigeon dust. There are some very good masks on the market. They are expensive but worth their weight in gold!Staying healthy should be a primary concern for yourself.Sometimes we take better care of the birds than ourselves! Keep all lofts and pens aerated to the max and don't forget to change the filters on your masks. It doesn't matter what your wearing if it's not operating properly!!Some of us are more suceptible than others ,but it's best to be safe!!!Also, keep in mind it's flu season so you have to be extra careful.A lot of viruses going around.Hope you get well soon George.

The best way to avoid these problems is to clean the loft as often as possible to avoid dust build up and have breathers (vents) with fans to blow out dust just enough ventalation. heres the shop vac got it at homedepot 100 bucks it works great to suck up all the dust and feces from the floor and hard to get areas.

Thanks Gabe. I'm looking forward to the pics. I was actually just talking to Keith yesterday about his loft and mine. His loft is well ventilated and there's not any feathers flying around vs my loft isn't as ventilated as his and when I come out of there I have feathers all over... definitely need to figure something out.

You would be suprised how much of that dust gets on you head or hair.Your clothing can be a dust magnet as wellDedicate a hat and some coveralls, and never bring them inside your home to hang up.......Aloha,Todd

Todd - tell me about it. I'm always full of the little feathers. My wife won't let me get next to my kids without changing. I have started wearing a hoody jacket when I'm in my loft. ---------- Efren Lopez SGVS

I have the south side of my lofts open, most of the feathers and dust blow out by the birds flying in thier lofts. even in the winter they are open. In the spring sparrows fly by and catch the small feathers that get blown to use in thier nests.

Yah George its a good place to hide. the closest roller club to me is the High Five Roller Club, it is about 3 hours away, I go to thier yearly meeting. but they are to far away to fly with, after square moved away and the only other roller guy got out of the hobbie there is no one close to me with roller. I guess Reno has a few roller guys that is about 70 miles from here. the other way to Redding or Yuba City is more like 100 miles... yep no-one would find you here.. LOL

How do you protect your wooden cages in that weather.Looking at the pics it looks like the snow could really beat up the wood cages!

Hello Geo:
Here is what I do, I have two large exhaust fans in the top of my loft that are temperture controlled (Home Depot $60.00), I wear a 3M Carbon filter (2300N95) with a breather on it they are about $10.00 each. I clean my loft once a month during off season & twice a month during the breeding season. A vaccum cleaner is your best buddy & if you can use a HEPA filter with it. Remember to clean the screens of the exhaust fans every time you clean the loft, if you don't you will burn up the motor. Before you installed the exhaust fans have an A/C guy look at your set-up so you can place the vents in the right place to get the best flow without creating a draft.

Some times spritzing a little water around is good. It cuts the dust a lot. I spray walls, ceiling and floor. Gomez

One tip to anyone using a shop vac. Get an extension hose for the vac, that way you can have the canister outside of the loft while you're inside doing your cleaning. It will really cut down on all the dust in the air.

George I hope your feeling better after taking medicine. The kind of work you did in the past did some harm to your lungs. It was a pleasure talking to you last night about your experience in the roller fancy. Good luck this year with the birds and get well soon. In the roller fancy, Ray Sanchez.
