should a person have more Breeders then Flyers (kit Birds )
I have seen a lot of lofts that have way more Breeders then flying birds, is this normal ? this way when you lose a Bird or two you can replace it with another since there is a lot of pairs being Bred ?
Or is it that they have a high % of very good Birds that they stock ??

Well George as you may know some guys just have an abundance of breeders with a wide open gene pool, and others have started their family's with a few pair and over the years have stocked many birds from their family.
There are others that have not dialed it in yet or just do not understand which direction they should be headed in and there for they have a loft full of pairs that have very low percentages. This may be one of the reasones some guys have more breeders than flying birds.
There are some guys who are just what we call performance pigeon collectors/feather merchants and they just love keeping birds and can not get rid of a single one.
I am sure there are many more reasons why some have more breeders than kit birds, the BOP could be another reason.
The old saying is to each it's own.

If you want to acquire good birds, look for the guy that has 3 or 4 times as many kit birds as breeders.
If a guy has 50 breeders and one kit, how in the heck do you think they know which of their breeders are good ones?
Of course there are rare cases where this is not the case - such as a guy getting ot of birds, or getting a bunch of breeders from someone else to didpose of etc.
But in general, look for the guy who is flying 2 or more kits at a minimum and a selcet gene pool of breeders that has been selected based on offspring performance.

16 breeders (8 pair) 90 kit birds. I believe that if someone is stocking more than 20 birds he is stocking a lot of un-worthy stock. He is kidding himself. He can rotate his stock as better birds come along than those he has in stock. Nobody, no matter what they say can have 40 and 50 stock birds....it is bullshit. He has to be stocking off the perch. If it looks good in feather and shape....stock it, has to be his prevailing evaluation system.
What does he do with them?

I must just be getting oldtimers, but I would never be able to breed on the scale that some claim. For me the fewer number of breeder pairs intensifies my ability as a manager. Even with detailed loft and flying records it is very difficult (for me) to understand exactly what I am looking at and interpret all the information anywhere near correctly. Truth is after awhile sometimes I just go by my gut. When reason fails I always follow my instincts. I understand this is not the most scientific of methods but my odds are better then the lottery! ;-)I also think having only one (me) or at most two tightly breed families will increase the percentage of good birds. Also my wife says I'm full of stuffing, do you think that is what she means?

I never breed out of more than eight pairs per breed. I only stocked one bird out of my Oriental kits this year. I raise my standards every year. Hopefully I wont have to lower them to replace my stock birds. If I do I am going the wrong way. I am currently flying five kits and plan to fly ten or more this year. I only stocked two out of my Birminghams and two out of my Fireballs. Hope to compete in 09 with my Birminghams, Fall Fly, World Cup and all.
