Rudy,
EVERY state has their share of the BOP problems. The more fliers in any given area, the more BOP problems you will see from that area.

I new to the sport so I have never flown any where but southwest Georgia, there are only according to the DNR 22 pair of nesting Peregrines in the state so I don't encounter them but due to all the shooting preserves here we have BOPs year round. The preserves that plant pen raised birds have the most trouble, a BOP can catch on of these planted birds with one wing behind his back. LOL
I don't have a day go by that I do not see one or more Coopers, Sharpshins, Redtail, Osprey and every now and then a Bald Eagle. Just from seeing what you folks in California deal with, I happy with the back seat in this category.

We got Bald Eagles up the yin-yang here in British Columbia,Canada. You can go up a river in salmon Spawning season and see 300-400 eagles.Peris are the worst coopers next then gosshawks merlin sharp-shinned but the damn henery(peris) is the biggest pain for sure.

Aloha Rudy,
I was taking pictures of my kit flying today and this sucker came out of nowhere and dive bombed the kit. Scared the s--- out of me and the birds. Fortunately no one got hit.

Blury pic, but we do have BOP's on the island.

Alohabirds, What you took a picture of should be a I'o otherwise known as a Hawaiian hawk. We would see them every once in a while when I lived in the islands. They should still be considered endangered so there shouldn't be too many around unless you got a breeding pair close by. Bad thing is if their numbers ever recover, you guys are in trouble because they are bird eaters.

Aloha Katyrollers,
Yes it is an I'O, and yes I do have a pair nesting nearby. So far I have had a couple hits but none taken.(Knock on wood). This pair seems to be getting smarter in their attempts. Before it was funny watching them try to chase the birds but this last time........ This bop came from up high and had the afterburners on when it busted up the kit. Fortunatly his guidance system malfunctioned and he missed. :)
They are still endangered but their numbers are climbing.

I think all of Greater Los Angeles has it bad.
for those that know our topography we have the ocean to the west and the mountains surrounding us like a crescent from the north in to the east and back around to the south.
all the mountains have foot hills and trees yes.. we have trees.
so through out the middle of the area we have small rivers were wild life live you have raccoons, opossums, and other types of water birds, and commies. and one of these oasis is only five blocks from my home.

so if I was a BOP I would live here also.

ps. our winter is 50 degrees and we are freezing our tails off.

When I lived in So Cal, I was in Manhattan Beach in the 60s and 70s, and had no bop hits on my kits for all that time. I was on 3rd st and Bill Patrick was on 5th. We had no problem with them then. I wonder if they have moved into the beach area there now?

Hey JDA, did you know Mike Butters at least I think it was close to that name, he moved a few years back and he was from Manhattan Beach, Ya in the middle nineties they placed a pair on the Vincent Thomas bridge and the rest is history. They released 88 or so falcons a year to make up for the DDT that oil companies were spilling off into the ocean causing weak or brittle eggs once that was cleared up they started placing more pairs in downtown L.A. and they spread like wildfire. The coopers have always been around but they took over because the gov. agencies that setup the peris release forgot to bring back the owls that were also affected by the DDT, the only natural predator for Coops, redtails and the peris. Redtails have also always been here but they developed the last of the open land here therefore wiping out all the gophers so they adapted and became bird eaters.

Hey Marcus I'm up here in Solano County as well fairfield. I just started about 3 months ago. I have started off with 6 Tony's Ruby's for the most part and trying to get me a good line going. I have about 22 birds in my loft right now. I fly them in two kits 11 birds at a time and they kit really well. My question is I'm not to familar with these BOP although I did get an attack a few weeks ago by looks like a hawk. Luckily he missed but scared a couple of my young Ruby's so bad that they dive to my roof and one of them crashed into the side of the neighbor's house. Are the BOP really bad in this area? I still have about 6 young that I'm flying to try to get them to kit before I have to lock them down. What's your experience in this area of Solano and what advice could you give me? I never fly in the mornings and usually fly my kits between 5 and 6 pm. They usually fly 30 to 45 mins and go straight back in the loft no hanging out. This seems to be working thus far but I'm hearing this is BOP season. your input on this matter would be much appreciated being that I'm new at this but love the birds and what they do in the air.

We got it bad here in Cali. Yesterday my birds got hit by a pair of peregrines till they finally got one of my young ones. the other one was still going after my birds and im on the roof of the house like a crazy maniac throwing stick and cans up in the air. trying to scare the dang bop away, finally it flew away. THEN!!!!!!! the first hawk that took the bird left it on the tower and tried to come back for seconds and then kept going, down a few blocks to another kit of rollers down the street. That was my bad experience yesterday. So im down 4 this year to the hawk.

just ask a question about these BOP up here in Solano county Ca let my birds up today a few hours ago Kit of 16 got attacked by a Peregrine hawk my kit scattered and he chased my best cock that should not have been flown! I thought he got the cock cause he was on his tail flying low. I'm happy to say I got off the hook all my birds came back the cock evenually came in about 20mins later! Man I'm lucky think it's time to lock it down!!!

I would say So Cal. And its not all B>O>P's that affect our rollers.. Its the "Project that got outta hand there with the placement of the super falcon.. A cross falcon that dosent migrate at all.. in fact it was planted and was suppose to erreticate or keep in check the ferall pigeon population. but that is not the case. I really feel for thease people in the L.A and surronding areas,,, they got it really really bad. worst than any rural area that is in the true but ever shrinking "Migratory bird belt". Hope it all works out..

Hey Rudy,
I`m still on lockdown for a little while. But we dont have `em bad where I`m at. Not sure why, but I got a couple roller buds 10 or 15 minutes away that get hit harder than me. To the south an hour, Troy Copeland and Clyde Davis get hit a lot there too.
