I have never used square perches. I now us plastic vee perches that clean a lot easier than wood. I order a couple of dozen every month to stay in my budget. By the year 2012 I might have all plastic!!!

Sal I like the mitered boards. Look like they would take up less room than vee perches. Hadnt ever thought of that. Learn something every day.

I have V perches and they take more space. My friend has the square perches and has double more birds in a smaller kit cage than me.
They also stay claner the birds.

Aloha Salas, The box perches I use are 9 inch square, made out of 1"x 6". I was told that some flyers make their boxes 7" square to keep the birds from "fooling around" in the perch.

I go with the 8"X8" box perches in a 4ft wide X4ft high X 3ft deep kitbox I have 32 perches but only keep 26 birds in there at the most.1"X4" common lumber works fine.Sand the pieces before assembly and paint 2 coats water based stain.I do a little woodwork in my spare??time and have yellow cedar scraps for my v-perches in the other lofts 1"X6" sand em real smooth with the random orbital sander and 2 coats paint they clean real easy. ---------- Kel. I don't believe there's a big difference between square or v perches! If the birds don't stand on the perch properly, they'll get crap on them...end of story.I prefer square perches simply because the look better. To me anyways!
Nice kitbox quickspin! Can you make me 1,i need it!!LOL!!

Like Louis said its all a matter of preference. In all the yrs I've had pigeons. I have never had any dirty birds with the way I make my V-perches. Here are some samples:

I don't see how with the V Perches the birds get crap.my birds are clean everyday not one shit on them ..or on there feet, clean to the Tee......check it out windjammer pics, look where the poo is..on the side not on the bird. I have try all and saw this is the best now for more space the others are the best ,but i rather sacrifice space for cleaner birds anytime. ----------p,s, is like having an umbrella on top of you. ---------- Ralph....

I have to agree that vee perches if wide enough are the best for keeping clean birds. I give my birds a bath once a week at least and clean the floors weekly. Sometimes more here in Florida when it is rainy I just wash the box with a water nozzle. My kit boxes are walk in 3X3X6'6". That way I can go in and handle my birds also. I release my birds by hand most of the time one bird at a time.

Hello ALL... I use three types in different situations.
The V style, I prefer this style
The square style, these are temporary, I remove them to install the Breeder Boxes
Box style, used in the kit box.

Just remember the closer the birds are sitting on the perches the tighter they will kit. Your birds spend the most time sitting in their kit boxes, let them get used to being right next to another pigeon or pigeons. Perch style is a preferrance. You should always have more perches than birds, never have pigeons sitting on the floor. You will run into real problems if a disease comes through the loft. I have 500 box perches 8" x8" x 3 1/2" deep. Never have more than 150 pigeons at any given time.

I got this from another roller man, I put them in the new kit box that I built, the way it is designed the birds always face the door, (I didn't believe this but it works) because they are staggered the birds stay clean and they can't reach each other to start trouble.
Has anyone else tried this?

The birds always take the top perches. My kit boxes hold 48 pigeons each for the 3 large ones (old birds). The 3 small ones hold 24 birds (young birds), then I have 270 perches in my breeding loft. I also house the birds in winter for 2 months in my breeding loft. My 2 lofts are at different locations. This spring I will have 41 old hens ranging from yearlings to 9-10 years old. I have 52 old cocks ranging in the same age as the hens. I perfer to fly cocks in competition, but do fly my hens for change of scenery. I have 3 blood lines in my loft that breed 20 to 1 cocks over hens. My best placement in the World Fly has been 35th with a kit of cocks (20) scoring 735 points. I use hens to carry my bloodlines in the stock loft. All my birds are flown for at least 3 years before they go to stock and of my 30 stock birds around 1/2 are prisoners.

I agree with you on the extra perches! My kitboxes have 24 perches, but I only like to keep around 18 birds in them! Mine get to stressed out acting when its full. Healthier birds in my opinion! ---------- Val

Thats true spanky .i scrape everyday. but i keep only 15 in one kitbox and 15 in another so its clean in 5 minutes..but i rather clean a perch than clean a bird with shit on his head. ..lol/ ps Val me too i don't like to crowd them in because of stress problems .keep low quantity but quality is what i strive for.. ---------- Ralph....

I baisically have all, Box, V, and rail. The rail perches are in my weaning pen, for the reason stated above "Bonding" then they move to the v or box perches. However my 11bird team when assembled twards the fall, they are in a pen with standing room only. Rember the standing room only pen is for short durations, when I can liberate the birds often. I have noticed the best kitting from the team that is in the standing room only pen.. hope this helps, and goodluck this year with keeping those new perches full....

Quickspin.....your final decision looks good. The only problem with box perches that are that big is,their is plenty of roon for them to tread each other on. And that YOU don't want in the kitbox. You may want to consider cutting them down just abite, like 6 x 6. Something like Dexter suggested. Remember, you just want the bird to be able to sit their quietly. ALONE.....LOL They do look good though. ---------- Fly High and Roll On Paul
