I see a better chance of breeding good rollers out of a straight flying roller with a solid gene pool behind it than lets say..a sacttering crossbreeder or a color chasing roller breeder. All the above have a chance of breeding a bird that rolls but who has probably the best chance..I'm betting on the straight roller especially if it has a ressive roll gene/factor that it is carring. The reason I am saying that I would not breed from it is because what if it doesn't carry the roll. It take a few year of breeding to figure it out and I would not be willing to work with a straight flyer ..only if a roller was not available..but if I was taking in other facter such as some of the other qualities... Quality/guy that started post.. stated such as body wise, siblings roll deep, fast but short, bird from my foundation cock...I still would not breed the bird because he has siblings of the bird that roll.

winwardrollers, I agree with you on what the experts say, and in some reading you will find some that have breed off non rollers. is about what works for you that all im trying to say. I wanna find my own reality taking into consedration what others have experienced but it's not all in stone. I got a prettie good handle on my rollers and am vary happy with the family ive created reguardless of how I did it, Im not in the buisness of selling birds or pedegrees, so im prettie open on what has worked for me. The same practices might not work for the next man but that's really not my "Emergency"...LOL, They can find out on their own what works for them..That's That. As far as my flying record...WOW not to impressive however you can look at the stat's and see ive improved over the three years ive been competing and recently fourmed a new region (9I)so comparatively well thats up to the person doing the comparing...LOL!I really want my birds to do the talkin but its just been a 'NIGHTMARE" getting stage time...yakno. I spent ten years+ building my famlies of rollers then I started to compete. The tread was straight flyers and all I was sayin is that I have breed off one and the results are exceptable,,, for me thats all. maby I should have included that I breed one cock bird to three hens took the best outta that and didnt look back,,and with deatailed pedegrees would that have made a diffrence? Im not talkin about or advising one to breed of a straight flyer from the pet shop. I just want it to be clear That there is a expetion to the rule thats all,, And as long as you are happy and rolling quality birds thats all that matters for me. But When someone says dont do this or that, for me personally withen reason I need more personal experience, to back that. Ive been raising rollers for 29years now, Ive seen alot learned alot and am willing to learn more,I Just go aginst the grain at times... We all have a common goal well at least alot of us but there are alot of diffrent roads to get there,,, That's all some just like the road less traveld hopefully I dont appear lost im jst on a diffrent road thats all...LOL

winwardrollers, So Your saying a straight flyer can produce rollers, but You don't advice it?

That is what I was saying..and yes I don't think it is good advice as well.

There are to many good starts out there now days of proven families that are ready to go....we just have tons of breeders that want to go down their own road and back track three to five years if not many more years(most never pan out).. to call the birds their own...when in fact they would be further ahead by starting out with the real deal and make their own branch/line/family out of the proven birds.

my take on this subject is not to breed from a straight flyer but a late developer to add stability in the program but i dont think a straight flyer, roll down, etc. would help in the long run.-joe v.
