For those who ship birds here what process do you have to go through?
Spent a good while at the Post Office today trying to get some info. All I got was a scan of a 2006 document saying I must contact Expedited Services Office when I have a shipment. They then would tell me whether I can ship or not and I may have to drive to a different location.
Kind of a pain to go through the money handling, etc. just to find out you can't ship? Which I imagine will be the case.
Just wondering if everyone else goes through this? Luke

I got the exact same message at my post office! I think it just boils down to, they don't want to get involved! I would have to travel an hr and a half one way to the Int. airport to ship! Takes the fun out of it, for sure! ---------- Val

I have ship twice here in the US no international.
1st you need the right box to ship the birds like the one that Tony sales. If you don't you will have problems.
2nd I took the box to the USPS and fill up the shipping address to the location. I made line and when it was my turn they process it like anything else. They had never ship any live birds before. But they took it like any other order.
Call USPS and tell them what has happened so they can fix it.

You need to first contact the District Expedited Service ESO. They will ask you where you are shipping from and where it will ship to. Then they will arrange the place and date that you can ship. The main stopper when shipping is the weather condition at both the shipping and receiving points. I forgot what the temperature window was but they will not ship when it is too cold or too hot. The other is the availability of air transport. Please visit the link below for further info:

Luke the Post Office is supposed to ship lives anytime you take them in. That is in the morning so they go out on the daily run. Fed-ex negotiated a contract last year to make it easier. There are a few places you cant ship because it takes more than three days. They must arrive in three days or less. I have never had a problem shipping anywhere. As close as you are to Richmond you should be able to ship nation wide with no problem. The temp limits are 25 to 85 I think. My best friend is the Postmaster here so I have no problems.
Mostly when you have problems is when you run into a postal clerk that is ignorant of the rules or thinks putting little birds in the boxes for two days is inhumane. They have to take the birds unless it is too cold, too hot, or cant be reached in three days. We are shut down in Florida for hot weather about two to three months a year but can still slip them in during cool fronts.
Sounds to me like you are getting a run around. I can get the rules for you if you like. I have never called ahead or anything. I just show up and fill out the paper work and pay my shipping charges. I did run into a new employee that didnt want to ship the last birds I took in so I went over her head. She was trying to show me how important she was I guess. The birds went out and got there the next day.

I also had an employee at the P.O tell me that they couldnt ship live birds. I refused to take that answer, and asked to speak to the post master. I asked her what the reason was why I couldnt ship live birds, and she said because they have never done it. I then advised her that I would like to see their policy that states that they dont ship them, which she could not provide. After she made a phone call to her area supervisor, the birds were shipped that same day...Sometimes you have tell push someone to get a direct answer, if they seem lost.

I usually dont have any problems as long as I get them there early enough and everything is ok with the weather. Like it has to be warmer than 35 and cooler than 80 degrees I just shipped rudy some birds last fall without any problems. And I just received some birds back in Jan. My post office calls me and my wife when we have something that wont fix in a post office box. The kicker might be is that we have 3 shipping hubs very close to our post office. I mean they can ship out of Cincinnati, columbus, and dayton. These are very large hubs and they do take live freight. I think that might be a big factor when someone is shipping birds from there home post office. But for the past 10 years its been pretty easy to ship and receive birds. Brian Middaugh

With only a few replies I guess we can all see that they are inconsistant. I'm within an hour of Richmond and Norfolk Airports.
I don't get rid of many birds but I do have the occassional one that could be of use to someone.
It's more trouble than it's worth. Luke
