Man by the looks of things soon no one will be able to Fly Birds in Southern California real soon.
When I lived there I did not fly from Oct.1 Holloween to April 1st April fools Day .
There were times I would lose 1 or 2 Birds to the BOP.
But know that theres alot of people flying all year around I doubt the BOP will ever leave (migrate) because theres too much FOOD available.
And like I said before I paid attention to the BOP real good and I noticed that when they Migrated back in around late October and before they would migrate out early March through March they would Eat like Racehorses .
I always told myself that if I was a BOP and I was getting ready to migrate thousands of Miles I would like to eat good for the long trip.
But then I said well if theres so much food available WHY LEAVE.
And thats what I think is happening there is so many flyers flying daily and feeding the BOP's that they will eventually just stay there and become FULLTIMERS.
Anyway good luck to everyone this season.
And remember there always SHOWING BIRDS and you dont have to risk flying or losing your Birds and theres usually a SHOW about once a Month and the TROPHYS are NICE.
But everyone remember the best Birds in the Roller World are right there in the greater Los Angeles area and thats why its so SAD that the BOP are ruining the Hobby for everyone.
The Pigeon Hobby is Big Business from the Grain (trucking) to the Hardware stores , pet shops , if everyone got out of pigeons JOBS would Be LOST and thats what society FAILs to realize.
I once thought about saving all my reciepts of all the MONEY I spent on Pigeon grain and Meds and wood and wire, but I didnt think it would Matter to people who hate animals anyway

Gabe Im sure they are or will the numbers are going to explode.
You can forget about ever seeing a Blue Bird or a Wood Pecker or a Cardinal.
But hey we live in a concrete Jungle and The Pepsi generation could care less about Birds .
the only thing that matters now day is the Video games and movies, besides the way the houses are being built nowdays a Kid aint got no Backyard to keep a few Birds or Chickens or a Rabbit.

Food ... if a person flys and feeds why leave?
You ever see where people feed wild cats or Commie pigeons and the cats and wild commies stay close to the area of the Feed and wait for the next meal.
Animals are smart and they will stay where ever there is Food.

good Gabe thats the first step accept Responsibilty.
You are the Birds Master and you are the one thats in Charge of making sure you dont send them on a SUICIDE Mission.
You have to be the SHOT Caller and only Fly when you think the Conditions are in Your Favor.

George,
It was like this last year. I still flew in all but 1 fly last year. We just need to learn how to work around them. I'm holding in for this week still thinking about letting them out next week as we will be having our first fly. If it's too rough for them I'll holding them in and wait till April. We'll be alright.
Is this your way of telling us all to move to HOT Las Vegas? Sorry man Los Angeles is were all of the work and action is at. Plus I share custody of my older son so wouldn't leave. How many flyers are out in your area? ---------- Efren Lopez SGVS

May the best survive...

I flew birds in SoCal back in the 90's and we had resident Coopers back then. I had a resident pair that nested in a palm tree several houses down from mine. While the Coops' were around year round, we didn't seem to lose as many birds as guys do now. I don't think there were as many Coops' back then and there was more for them to eat besides our birds.

George, you bring up a good point, you have guys breeding up a couple of hundred birds to feed them,on top of it the type of birds that seem to be popular down there probaby adds to the losses. So they are "fed" year round, and due to a constant food supply the survival of the young are much higher and they come out very strong, and then they have access to an easy food source, hmmm. ---------- Just my Opinion Scott

no Efren im not saying for anyone to move to Las Vegas.
if thats what I wanted to say I would have said it , everyone that knows me, knows that I TELL IT LIKE IT IS.
Anyway I was just saying that I hear people COMPLAIN about the BOP's and the person(s) usually complaining is part of the problem .FLYING BIRDS THRUOGH THE MIGRATION or in Winter when the BOP are in the CITIES.

Scott, you said
"George, you bring up a good point, you have guys breeding up a couple of hundred birds to feed them,on top of it the type of birds that seem to be popular down there probaby adds to the losses".
Scott,I agree with the first part of your statement that the number of birds being bred and flown (when we should be on lockdown) is contributing to the losses, but can you explain why you think the type of birds down here add to the losses?

Man, today I was one of the guilty one's. I couldn't resist and let my kit out. They went up and within 1 minute a cooper hit them. Then two other coopers came. Shortly I had 3 coopers after my birds. About 5 min. later the coopers started diving after my kit. They chased my birds up high but then the Falcon showed up and got one. Then another falcon showed up and got another one. Then 2 more coopers showed up. Total of 5 coopers and 2 falcons hit me today almost at one time. 20 birds went up and only 13 returned, looks like they all got one... Today was a very very bad day. I guess I won't be flying for a few weeks to make sure I will have a team for the WC. It was like a Las Vegas Buffet at my house today. Man I'm so pissed, I will think of this day the next time I think of flying during these times. ---------- Efren Lopez SGVS

Russ, if you breed a bunch of early developing birds, chances are stability is an issue, bonehead and instabilty go hand in hand. Boneheads get ate,I see the same here, when a bird gets ate around here there is a good chance that it isn't a great loss. But also these birds don't work just anywhere, some locations are impossible to fly from and it isn't even worth trying.

My problem isn't so much bonehead unstable birds. It's more like too many ambush points for the preds to get the birds as they're leaving the loft and then again when they re-enter the loft. I think we could fly a team of straight flying stiffs and get hit just as much. I'm sure that the preds recognize the wingbeat of a roller compared to a feral pigeon , And they also know that the roller doesn't have the street smarts of their country cousins. Preds are very smart birds. That's why I lock down to preserve the previous years work so I can enjoy them next season.
