Just wanted to get some info on how many of you resist flying your kits during these tough migration times? I myself am not very good at it. I try to lock down but when I'm out there beginning to feed them I just can't resist and let them up. My new method is to go out there early and just feed them so this way I don't get tempted to fly them later that day. Hopefully this will work, plus I can just think of yesterday's massacre of 7 KIA.

I fly 365 days a year barring bad weather. I have a lot of hawks but my residents are trained and the migrants I use to test my Orientals. I fly more breeds than just BR's. If I didnt I would be wiped out like I have been in the past. I have eagles that eat the catfish out of my stock pond and resident red tails. I think they keep the coopers and sharp shin at bay some during the rest of the year. I have a deep sympathy for you guys that are plagued for months at the time. I used to live in an urban area where you got hit the minute you released the birds. It sure isnt fun.

Efren, it just comes down to asking yourself is it worth it?
The same holds true to cutting them loose to late and chancing them flying into the night or cutting loose in very unstable weather.
I've seen guys just keep flying until there was nothing left, come Spring they had nothing to fly.
I think the family plays in also to some extent, with stable families the good ones just don't need to be flown as often, and when locked down for a period of time it doesn't take long for them to bounce back, the hotter families just become hawk bait as they can't help themselfs and are a problem getting back up.
Next time you open the door just ask yourself is it ok to loose some today, that usualy does it for me.
But then I don't have to lock down unless they are on the move (migration), in fact I have a team up right now.

Last week i lost 6 birds.Biggest hit i've taken in about 3 months and it seems the Coops have returned to my side of town!I have to keep a watchful eye when the new ones are out or they'll get hit. Some Copps could care less if you're there. They'll swoop in right in front of your face!

Great post Efren, I think Scott and Edgar have two of the best ideas. I like to fly my homers at this time when I have breed some during the year take off the edge of releasing birds.

I`m getting better at it. usually every year I lose most of whet I raised, then like Scott said, all I have in the spring is babies.
The bast way I`ve found is to put them in the loft till spring.
This yer I have 14 in 1 kitbox that werent showing much promise this summer. I flew them till I got hit 1 time. They`ve not been out sinse. I may try them again soon as I`m feeling a weak urge to see them go up and some of them are starting to impress me a bit. If I get hit again I`ll keep `em in anouther month.
I do have 2 young kits in the loft. They wont even see the kitbox again till march. These were the best I raised this year.

Here in L.A. the hawks do a pretty good job at reminding me that this is a bad time to fly. I see the street pigeons getting chased every day. So I just let them rooftop while I scrape the floor. Then I get them right back in. But even that can be risky. I've had 3 birds bump, and last week just as I was getting the younger birds in a red tail swooped down and tried to grab one. He was only about 8 or 9 feet off the ground. Coopers..tat would be expected... but a red tail...??!!

I always feed my kit birds too much and let them get a little fat in the winter. That way I cant let them out or they will sit around the loft and not trap in. I know better than to let them out this way.
Once I plan to refly them again in spring, I feed them only 1 cup or 1/2 the amount of feed and I feed them only wheat or milo for three days before letting them out to get them hungry, this really gets their attention. I found this better to get them hungry with out going one or two days with out feed and then let them out.

I do have to cut back on the feed (mix) when the weather warms up so they do not lay eggs, whcih only aids in my routine to get them ready the release again. Bill C

Well, I've been on lock down all winter. I posted this earlier this year, and when I couldn't resist. Much better at locking down now. Especially when I have an actual A team going...lol

For me the best way to avoid flying the birds is to work as much OT as possibleand to take the family as many places as I possibly can that way I'm not around the house that much this time of year and when it comes to fly time I can go to all the shows and flys possible because I knocked out most of the family stuff already( Dineyland, snowboarding&sleding, dirt bike riding or any other amusement parks possible).

Temptation is hard to stop. What I do is just watch some videos I took of my birds when they were flying. It still doesn't satisfy me. I also watch other youtube videos of pigeons flying. But it still doesn't satisfy me.

Maybe it is an addiction? So the best way is to stay away from the loft.

You don't and get creamed for the first time by a Red Tail while they have all landed on the loft roof. All is good as the Red Tail dropped the bird into a 2 foot snow bank. Had to do a little to reach the down bird but it is resting well inside the house. Had a really deep cut in the vent bone area. It should make a full recovery.

That is life,
Thor
