I never fly less than three. If I have less than three I mix them in with another kit. most times I dont fly more than a dozen unless I am short on time because I like to see what each bird is doing. I am currently building a 20 bird kit to rule the world in 09.LOL

This subject made me think of something else. Being new to the comp thing how many should I have in the A-kit for comp. Should there be say 25 and pull five on the week before comp or should I chance only twenty and sub from the B-team if I run into problems.

The most I have housed in my box is 35 fliers. If you have the room, the sky is the limit. It all depends how big the pen is. They don't need much space if they are flown on a regular basis.
Food for thought. Sounds like you have Show Rollers. If so, save yourself the time and heart ache by not flying your birds. Show birds are meant for the show pen and not in the air. Would do you no justice for proving out a Show bird in the air.
People really don't know how much time we invest in flying out our birds. Time better spent else where if you asked me in your case.
To each his own,
Thor

Just in case your concerned with my credentials I probably fly more birds per year than most people own. I am currently flying five kits every day except in bad weather. I fly 365 days a year and will be up to fourteen kits by fall. That is my limit. Show birds bull crap. I have no use for show birds and think the show pen has ruined enough breeds already. To each thier own but put show birds in the show and performers in the air. I do fly other breeds other than Birms and like them all. Again each to his own. So if your worried about my amount of fly time, you can rest easy now. I usually start flying by two in the afternoon and release the last kit around four or four thirty. The only thing I dont have is a club or group to fly with.

Hey sippi With regard to your original question, I think it is easier to fly more than 20 and take some out when competition time nears. Adding new birds late in the game can upset the apple cart in my opinion. Al

The comment was in regards to Andrew's question.
Wow, you must be retired. I only wish my wife and the work schudle would let me fly that many. Than again, nah I'll pass.
2 kits is more than enough to fill my needs.
Good luck Sippi, Thor
