I breed open Loft.
Would prefer individuals but they take too much time and I like sitting in my loft and seeing them all fly around - so I guess I really prefer open... ---------- Efren Lopez SGVS

I know why you don't want to do an open loft breeding! I tired it this year. I am just starting out and I thought it would be easier so I just let them go. I had 3 males that will be the father of most birds this first round. They was jumping every hen there. Even the paired up ones. I now have 9 breeding cages and they are all sectioned off. At least the second round I will know who is the father. It does take more time but I have tons of time to spend anyway I like.

I sectioned off my loft into 9 big breeding cages so they all have cement floors. I am on my hands and knees every other day with a scrapper and little shovel. Oh by the way is cement floors all right for pigeons? I used an existing building and just put up some screen sections inside. Why aren't you guys on the chat Line?

I didn't even think about that! I used ground up corn cob on the floors for the canaries when I was raising them. You get it at pet stores and it is ground up corn cob in chunks a little bigger than a kernel of corn. I'll have to get some that works really good and keeps the birds feet clean. Thanks for the reminder. I hope you have wire under the dirt floors. Skunks and raccoons will dig right under the floor to get inside.

I have breed with both styles of lofts over the years and although I would prefer individuals they take alot more time than open lofts and I just dont have the time to deal with them. My stock loft is full of brothers and sisters and I have gotten some great birds out of them in the open loft set up. Not sure it is a good idea if the birds aren't closely related. But to each his own. Joe ---------- J.M.Urbon Lofts A Proven Family of Spinners http://www.freewebs.com/jmurbonlofts/

Open loft is a lot funner to observe the birds but all my breeders are in individual. I have 8 pair in individual pens now...still have 3 empty and 8 more in progress. Don't have 20 pair of breeders so I'll use the extras for fosters, if they sneak in a round I know who the parents are too.
The fosters who don't get to raise their own (ever) are in open loft.

My birds are in there own nest boxes until they lay the first round and then they are open loft for the rest of the breeding season. I breed best to best...regardless of who came from who...but all the birds in my loft have been my same birds for the last 5 years or offspring from my 5 or 6 main pairs...so Do I really care if one of my good birds hops another good bird....I don't breed for peds..I breed for the kit box....
Do I think my birds hop from mate to mate...NO!!! does it happen every long now and then...could...again.....If I am breeding for peds...or want to be 100% that is fine...but I also enjoy my birds and I LOVE letting them be pigeons in an open loft...and I feel that they are happy..and happy pigeons are healthy pigeons...been back in birds since 01 and never lost a breeder yet....and I breed from Jan-OCT...and the birds do not look stressed...anyway...just my thought...plus..to time consuming for individuals.

I do the same thing , I work 40 plus hours a week and I dont have the time for Individuals besides the Whole Roller community knows that I breed and Fly CULLS.
my boxes are Big as some guys Individuals so the Birds have plenty of space to do there thing .
I also dont have any perches in the loft other then the one in front of the box entrance , so the Birds perch right in front of thier box.

I'm with Joe on this , my breeding loft is within the loft, which are fairly large ind. I lock them in when need be then open them up where they can get excercise, sun bath ect. Most interaction is done in the breeding boxes when they are large enough, couple that with a all heavily related birds and no outside birds allowed in the main breeding loft and I sure don't loose any sleep over it as I don't breed for paper anyway. I much prefer the current arrangement along with healthier birds and an oppurtunity to enjoy them, now if I had a hogepodge of birds I would say locked down ind. all the way,or at least until I established a family where I dumped everything else. With that said, I can't say that I would just want open nest boxes either. Scott ---------- Just my Opinion Scott

i like the individual set up. i work over 40 hours and week and i still have time to take care of my birds. i guess it depends on what level you want to take it to.each one of my individual has it own sun cage so they get lots of sun and they don't seem to be sad and it is only for a few months. thin back to the stock loft. i like open loft for fosters. that just me 420 west side loft

At the begining or starting to accomplish a family of birds is a good idea to breed individuals.Knowing my family now ,,from color, type and sometimes marking and is a close knit family now ,,I like to breed open loft for the reason that they get to fly around the loft and get some excersise. I will breed pairs in individual stalls if I have certain birds or older birds,, that I want to be sure of the mating. R-LUNA

I breed both. I put special pairings and new matings in the individual pens. Since all my birds are tightly line bred families I also have some in open lofts. There will definitely be hanky panky in open lofts. I had a cock once that would quietly follow a pair on the floor and immediatly jump the hen when her mate got off. I culled him from the stock loft. I have also had some colors come up that werent possible indicating that a certain cock was the parent instead of the mate. I dont over crowd my stock lofts and this causes less illegitimacy. After all the birds are down on eggs I also think the hanky panky is drastically reduced.

I have always found that if you give a pair a large enough box to nest in they will do most of their breeding in there. I rarely see my birds breed outside of their boxes so I feel pretty safe about who is the parents of which offspring. I also hold pedigrees with little regard other than for my own breeding purposes. I dont sell birds and I breed from between 6 and 8 pair and my stock loft is 8'X12' so the birds are far from being over populated. I always found it interesting that when we talk about selective breeding using individual pens many people equate this to pedigrees and I have always been curious as to why? If an individual is using individual pens for pedigree purposes he or she needs to learn that pedigrees are only a tool to be used by the breeder and no one else. They are nothing more than a piece of paper and if the birds do not do what the individual desires in the air the pedigree is only good for one thing and I cannot say what this is on this forum. Individual Pen breeding eliminates the high probability of illegitimacy in my opinion.

Actually it is Joe. This is something that I have heard for many years. Usually from somebody that really knows nothing about the subject but rather heard it from somebody else. I personally feel as you do that it is just a tool that I use for my records. Even in my own program I geerally go by my gut feeling when pairing my birds up and the only thing I look for on a pedigree is that they arent full brother sister. I have done this type of pairing in the past and find I like more fist cousin, father daughter, aunt or uncle to neice or nephew works best for me. ---------- J.M.Urbon Lofts A Proven Family of Spinners http://www.freewebs.com/jmurbonlofts/

I do about half and half, I use the individual when I really want to know where they are coming from, and open loft I like because the seem to do better in a community living, plus less wasted food. also most of my family are so closely related it probably wouldn't be a big deal, I just roll them I don't sell pedigrees .

I love going to my loft coffe in hand, and sit on my chair. Just sitting there for an hour watching the birds building nests, eating, and chasing, beats seeing any marrige counciler.lol. I also have a couple of lockd cages for that bird that likes to rip the loft to pieces(WE ALL HAVE ATLEAST ONE). I think they look abit sad when there in cages and the mess they make is unreal. Why do they sh*t like donkeys but dont in a open loft? Thanks yours in roll. harrison uk hull

My familey of birds all come from the same guy and he hasnt EVER brought a new pigeon into his familey. Although he tells me he does plan to soon. Yes I pick my pairs what I want to go together but I dont care to much if one gets tredded by mistake. They are all what I look for in a roller so if I was to worried about somthing tredding something by mistake it wouldnt be worthy of been in my breeders in the first place. My breeders have good depth, and shallow depth when needed, good controle and consistance in rolling. they could all have a gang bang for me. As long as they breed lol.. yours in roll thanks harrison.
