i have a pair of birds, and their first round of young this year were found with holes pecked in them, they were about 2.5 weeks old but survived.then the second round of young it happened again but at 5 days old so both were dead do you think it will be the cock doing this and why?has this happened to anybody else?

alright robbo ,i checked all the birds for signs of blood non of them looked any different.if it was another cock in the hut surely the cock sitting the young would chase it out of its box,

Lee, I had a cock last year that did the same to his young, I fostered a few rounds off him and that was it for the season.
I tried him again this year and no less than 15 min ago just found one of his youngsters chewed up badly , pulled him and he is going back into the kitbox , it is like he is actualy canabalistic,it was more than just pecking.

Not sure why Lee, logical choice is something missing in the diet , not sure what it could be with this cock though as the breeders are pampered pretty good , and he is the only one.

I am not sure that I would foster his eggs either as he may produce many more like himself. If I were you I would cull the bird or only fly it regardless of how good a spinners it is.....

Levi has a section in "The Pigeon" on cannibalism. They never did find out why they would do this. But once it started both parents would do it. He did say that they broke up the pairs for six months and they forgot the habit. Until then they killed or injured everything.

I have a different theory although it is not proven true. I remember the same happened a while back when I was still young and owned homers. One day I remember my dad told me that if we (human) touch babies to babies, we tend to carryt heir scent to another so they(the breeders) will stop taking care of them.

theory 1: either you touch the babies too much that the parents get scared and thinks that you have changed their babies...or

theory 2: the pigeons must have such a strong nose scent that by touching other babies, they will smell the other babies (that aren't theirs) and...

the result for both theories: kill the da** babies and start over (a pigeons perspective).

These theory can be proven false if:
a) you never touch the babies
b) you only have one pair (but they might smell cheese on your hand and start chowing down j/k)

just my theory.

I have had this problem also, I killed the cock. It's offspring have never produced that gene. My best Bill Barrett line.

What I have found that works well if you have a bully cock bird is try and catch him going into that area and thump him on the head and beak a few time with a pencil and do it ever time he goes near that area. They soon learn who is the head pecker and what areas not to visit

OK, #1 the 'scent ' theory was a nice try BUT no good. .. i am a 60 yr roller breeder.."so u dont think I am BS"..The reason is,.I put a light touch of vicks vapo on the squabs: this does not run the parents off and IT WILL STOP THE PECKING OR SCALPING OF YOUNGSTERS,so there goes that theory, ALSO MICE will enter the nest at night under the hen and do damage...Fighting will also cause squabs to get cuts an tear marks,There is no reason to kill a bird because it pecks on young{ [this is not a gene problem] It may be looking for SALT,or has a slight Mineral deficiency, and is trying to find it,THIS is the BREEDERS lack of patience,So killing is the fastest way to eleminate the problem,{THE SAME HOLDS TRUE FOR ROLLDOWNS] killem? I dont call these people rollermen, There are more answers to this problem, than what ive written....119

It maybe a bully bird fighting and as they go at it the babys are killed ...ususlly they get thrown out of the nest.

Could Be Mice...

Can other birds get into your coop ? I once saw A BLUE JAY go in the loft pick up a baby about 4 days old ,snapped its head off and ate it unbeleavable
