I have a bird, that is 2 years of age. I havent flown the bird in almost a year. Today I let him out and the first thing he did was to try and fly from the kit box but could not. Every time he tried to take off he would flip and hit the ground almost like a parlor. He's never done that before, he finally made a short flight back to the kit box. He has no injuries,What could this be a lack of exercise, or what?

i think you got yourself a roll-down..try feeding it less food to see what it does...i think that bird might have become a cull. i use to have birds like that too..they just turn out to be something else. im not telling u to cull that bird...but try letting it out test the outside environement first.

Never answer a question with a question, but! Why are you trying to fly a bird that has not flown for a year? Is it a stock bird? A stock bird worth keeping for over a year should not be placed at risk. If it has another reason for not flying, then what happens in the loft? I don't understand.

Happens all the time over at my place with the occasional bumpers. Lock them down for a long period of time and watch out. Some usually would kill themselves while others will have injuries like you wouldn't know. Add snow on the ground and all hell breaks out when I open the door.

Even my most stable rollers will bump occasionally if locked down that long - well not a year. What happens is they get out of shape, that and the excitement of being able to fly again causes a reaction of the worst nature.

Get it back to flying form and see how it turns out. I'm pretty sure it'll get back up to grade.

Just put out two birds myself that were in the stock loft for 2 years. Just never got any thing worth while out of them so they are going back into the air. Got one flying well. Still sloppy rolling. The other, well she has not taken off yet. I'll be releasing her at a distance soon if she keeps this up.

I guess my first thought is, did you already cut the feed way down to get him in shape and to insure he`s hungry for that first release?

My thinking here is he could be too weak to fly. If this is the case, more feed would be my next step.

To go in the opposite direction with this, if hes only been in the kitbox a short time ,fresh from the loft ,then maybe he is too fat and cutting the feed, slowly, would be the first step. Dont flag him up, just let him venture on his own to regain his wings and strength.

Just my thoughts
