I am thinking of making my kit boxes dark for my holdover kit, the idea is so they won't want to mate. but I'm worried about it getting to hot in the summer. does anyone fly from dark kit boxes?

I have flown from darkened boxes for the past 4 years with good results, especially when referring to mating. It keeps them on their perches and off the floor.

Jerry I was wondering if the rollers get hot in the summer or do you have some way to keep them cool

The heat does build up in the darkened boxes. I check them on a regular basis, and if they get above 20 degrees hotter than the outside temp, then I will open the door and keep the wire door closed, allowing them air and light, but that doesnt happen often. I will open the wood door to allow natural light to shine in atleast once a week. Sun makes them happy with a bath pan inside.

Dave , there is no purpose to do it, plus you can't enjoy the birds nor can they just be pigeons soaking the sun (which they need), keeping a close eye on your birds and gauging condition is critical. Dark boxes adds nothing , plus the heat is a killer come summer and there is just no sence in using such a setup. If they are breeding in the kitbox you are overfeeding them. ---------- Just my Opinion Scott

I believe dark boxes help keep the birds from pairing up and laying. I also beleive it gives a bit of an advantage the first few minutes of the fly.
I agree with Scott that it is crucial to have airflow.

Definately feed is the key to keeping them from mating in the kitbox or any loft for that matter.I keep it dark tho when I'm gonna fly em they seem to kit tighter, then open the flypen for when they come back in. ---------- Kel. Rum-30 Lofts

I keep there minds on food not sex. by controlling the feed. keep wider wire floors so they spent time on the perches .make sure you have a bottom that nothing can get in from under... ---------- Ralph....

if food is the answer, how do I know how much to feed with out starving them to death? they hang on the wire like they are starving now, most don't want to fly, when I chase them up they fly for 5 minutes and want to come down

i get them to a point that they stay up for 20 minutes ,they use to staying up longer because of more feed i give them but i lower it down gradually not to weaken them to a point of starvation. some days i feed by table spoon some days by teaspoon some days by two or three clench hands.according to how they feel in my hands and look on the ground and air.the real horny ones are the one i put away and keep them just about real hungry but not the whole gang ,I grab them when i know they had about enough, but still enough to be healthy not starving.putting in the kit box while everyone is still getting there share.I have them in a semi dark loft.lights come in from bottom wire and small wire front..so far its been working they dream about food not sex ,lol..,.. ----------p.s. If that don't work i throw in a couple of condoms in the kitbox.//lol.. Ralph....
