yes they do smell and they make a big mess the Birds also drink a lot of water.
But there is less waste as the Birds dont pick through it and you dont have to feed any grit.
some good and some Bad things with pellets
also they dont sell breeders conditioner out here in las Vegas I would have to special order it

For my breeders i feed a combination of 16% mix and 22% pellets.I give them pro vital powder in their water to control the watery droppings & smell that come with feeding pellets. It's also a great additive for breeders as it carries all the minerals and vitamins needed for super healthy squabs!
For my young kitbirds i tend to mix it up quite a bit with more protein until they reach their 6th month.I then feed them like my old kit birds...50/50 mix of wheat and milo with an ocasional increase in protein for boost.

There was another thread that was discussing feed for the flyers and I can not locate it.
Someone made a comment on feeding the flyers canary seed was not good.
Would someone let me know what the title to that thread was????
Thank you, Richard

i like breeder conditioner it work for me i like the pellets too. they are messy but the baby's do get everything they need to grow. they drink a lot of water because the pellets have a lot of salt in them. that way the droppings come watery.

Cafeteria feeder with milo, wheat, corn, peas, safflower, grit and pigeon pellets.Minimal waste. When I have them in the individuals at the beginning of the breeding season I feed them a mix of the above in a hopper attached to the cage.Big time waste but the chooks eat it. ---------- Kel. Rum-30 Lofts

PLS....this topic covers alot of area. Depending where you live may decide WHAT you feed. Iam in Ohio and I feed my breeders Nature Wise Game Bird pellets. When the temps get really cold, I add some cracked corn to provide added heat for them. This season I will experiment with giving ALL my birds the pellets. Hope this adds alittle light. ---------- Fly High and Roll On Paul
