I was chatting with Juan about the different rolling pigeon families and types of bloodlines in order to get a leg-up on how to move forward with my birds.
There were 2 birds in question that a RPDC member has and I wanted to get some background data on them:
1) Blue Check Self Hen ICRC #1010 - yr 2006 and 2) Cock Red Grizzle WF ICRC #1055 - yr 2006.
I asked Juan what family of birds were this Cock and Hen biogentically (closely) related to and had listed these ten names below. 1) Higgins? 2) Jaconette? 3) Reed? 4) Bob Scott? 5) Hilton? 6) Plona? 7) Smith? 8) Perkins? 9) McCully? 10) Homer Cadera?
Below is a brief summary of what I received from Juan Navarro on this particular subject. Juan: "For example the Jaconette, Reed & Higgins birds are similar in family type."
...while
"The Hilton, Plona, Smith, Perkins & McCully birds were from so long ago that most of the birds off of them have developed into their own families."
"All of these birds have origins to Bill Pensom in one way or another."
The real importance isn’t what someone’s family of birds started out from; it’s what the present day type is… Juan ---------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------- What I learned is that Juan's family of rolling pigeons has their origins to Pensom and Smith... and there is a touch of Reed. His birds are somewhat similar to my family in body type and plumage but SLIGHTLY different in roll. Juan has more frequency in his birds which average somewhere in the 15ft-25ft range.
Hmm....
Keep in mind that I started out breeding for depth and have observed my best kit birds roll 20ft-50 ft with moderate control.... but to me there's an insufficient frequency of rolling required to get those top scores in the flys.
So... there's a lot of hard work ahead for me if I plan to improve my family of rollers here at Deep Spin Lofts.

Hi Triple "G"
Over the years I have learned quite a lot of things about the proper care and training of Birmingham Roller Pigeons from Juan. He's very intelligent and offers many years of wisdom from his time spent with the sport.
Today people often talk proudly about their birds (style & type) and who engineered that particular family of rolling pigeons to greatness. Names often pop up like Higgins, Plona, Reed, Perkins, Graham, Neible, Pensom, Hilton, Cadera, Houghton, Smith, Kopp, Perkins, Jaconette, McCully, Oullette and others.
.....however
One of the most intriguing statements that Juan has left me with was this one below.
J. Navarro: "The real importance isn’t what someone’s family of birds started out from; it’s what the present day type is…"
Talk to you later...
