I don't think premature babies are ever born. They only hatch if they have developed all of their embryo compartments. When the babies don't develop those organs than it is most likely that it won't hatch. I think you got yourself an early-bird.

Happens from time to time over here. Some times at 15 days. It is usually from one particular click pair. It isn't that uncommon over here.
We all know that the normal is 19-21 days. Now is the thing, have you had any that hatched after 23 days. I have some pairs that would abandon their eggs after 20 days. Then I have some pairs that would sit on eggs regardless how long it takes. These pairs make great foster parents.

Thor, I missed up big time not long ago, I had an 2 eggs, one 22 days the other 21 days, when I candeled them everything seemed fine but when they didn't hatch on the 20th day I though well here another clutch that went bad, so I removed them and opened the shells to try to determine what went wrong. If I had waited I believe these two would have hatched out fine. I don't know a lot about pigeons but with my bantams their incubation is sort of put on hold until all the eggs are laid that are going to be, some of my hens have a magic number, then they start to set in earnest. Could this be what happened with the pigeon eggs?

Happy for you Bertie, sometimes I miss by my calculations, but I think the egg knows best! I find the parents will know when an egg is past due and will eventually kick it out of the nest.
Roy, sorry for your loss, next time let the birds due the counting! ;-)

Bert, There is nothing like a warm and fuzzy in the nest. I like your picture of the bird rolling!

Curious why you just didn't let the parents sit on it a couple of more days? I hate it most when the fosters jump the nest at 19 days. It is hell looking for another pair to put the hatching eggs under.
It is usually a good sign when you peek at the egg and you see a dent at 18-20 days. I have been found guilty of helping some fuzz balls hatch out a couple of times.
If is isn't one thing, it is another.
To a wonder '08 breeding season, Thor

Bertie, Fuzz is all I have left. Wife says it makes me look sexy, I think that is the only time she has ever lied to me! ;-)) I also have a shoulder bird or two, I was so proud! Then I realized they were only showing the other birds how well they have me trained! :-( Oh well, I have the feed can and a new found respect! Only joking.
