I have to pay $24.00 for 50 pounds! And then I have to pay $17.00 for 20 pounds of dove food. This gets the babies learning and makes them tame!

New feed store in Ontario, CA is charging the following:

12% feed - $14.50
16% feed - $15.50
22% pellets - $16.25

I went today and got 5 bags of 16%. Wanted to stock up just in case it goes up again...lol

You might want to try buying the feed in bulk!!!! If you bought 1000 pounds and split it between four or five guys(club) and placed it in 50 gallon drums. You would save two to three dollars a 50lbs. Purina Pigeon Pellets (Green) $18.60, wheat $15.20, White Millet u/$15.00, White Maple Peas $26.00 all 50 lb sacks.

I look for the prices to go higher. They are predicting $5.00 a bushel for corn this fall.Higher corn prices less of the other grains will be grown. Add to that the spiraling fuel costs and I see no direction but up!

hey brother's i rarely post but i'm alway's here. i just payed $22.00 bucks for 50 pound bag of 16%, in the bakersfield area. you would think that with all that farm land, the prices would be cheaper, but no. i actuall threw some seeds in the ground yesterday, and i will probably plant alot more in the future. but for my birds sake, i will cut down on drinking beer. the price of beer has gone up. but i don't need to drink, so i will save the money for my birds feed.
99 beers on the wall, no more...

i will also cut down on eating out... and save extra money as well... for my gas
well i hope the new president ends the war next year! and maybe all this madness will go back to normal

Quit driving around 10 MPG gas guzzlers and we will pay less for feed!

We're our own worst enemies in this guys. We use so much gasoline that we have shifted the supply and demand curve to where oil is double what it was a year ago, so farmers plant more corn to produce ethanol. So, you will see that the price of feed will end up tracking with the price of oil over the next few years.

I'm paying $24.00 for 50 lb 16%, but only $8.00 for 50 lb of wheat or milo, but can not get hard red wheat here only feed grade.
Most of the increase has to do with the oil prices, it costs more for the farmers to irrigate, harvest, haul to the dryers, more to process and to deliver, but most of the increase is not going into the farmer's pocket but to the middle men!

The ethanol idea is a joke! Cost too much to produce it!

I can't afford the high dollar grains like peas and safflower anymore! At least until I decide which family of birds that work best for me! Then I will downsize to a very small operation! Thinking about culling a family and some fosters now! Until I discover my high % producers, fosters seem like a waist of feed and space to me!

The farmers certainly arent getting the cash. The greedy middle man and the more greedy oil companies are soaking up that gravy. Cows are down to almost nothing (I have a hundred brood cows). I probably wont even make feed money out of them this year. Wheat is going to get higher because of oil and corn. It is a vicious circle. Wont get better until we say no to the oil companies who are making a meager billions of dollars profit per quarter.

I agree with Val the whole ethanol thing is a joke. There is really no profit in it except for the money that the goverment is pouring into it to subsidize it. If it was not for this money there would not be so many ethanol plants going up. All of these plants are creating a huge demand for corn and is one of the main driveing forces for the high corm prices. The weak US dollar makes US grain cheaper for foreign countries so they are buying more of it and also creating more demand. Farmers can sell fall corn on contract for $5.70 as of just the other day. At this price there is no way that companies can produce ethanol at a profit. So not only are we paying more for pigeon feed and gas but we are also paying more everytime we go to the grocery store. I just do not see what is gained by the ehthanol. The goverment is pumping money into it so it is costing us all money there and then we are paying more to feed our birds as well as ourselves and it is not keeping the gas prices down so it hurts us all. The only ones who are getting anything out of it are the ethanol compaines and the farmers and the farmers are not gaining as much as it would seem because of the higher cost in putting out and harvesting their crops.
Soybeans are also a lot higher because of the bio-diesel demand right now. Wheat prices are at record highs because of forign demand and short harvest because of flooding in some areas and drouts in other areas of the country. All of this created more demand for acres and less acres are available for other crops like milo so the price of them will also go up.
I know personally I am cutting back numbers all of the way around on rabbits, chickens, pigeons, and goats. Not only that but I am traveling less for shows etc. At this point I am not sure what else to do.

John, that was about as well said as it gets. the gov`t is urging the farmers to plant more corn to make the ethanol.
so they grow less wheat, milo, peas and soybeans etc..
Its a viscious circle and we are all stuck in the middle of it. The politicians say change is coming, but I say change is already here. Its time to take a step back and do what actually works. this new change sux.

All these price increases are screwing us all. My work is cut in half and spiraling fast. Barely making the bills. Several people at work have already had vehicles reposessed. some are fighting to keep their homes. We just terminated anouther 40 jobs last week. We cut 35 last november.

the feed prices are just the tip of the problem guys. good luck to you all.

Thanks Butch. I think things will get worse before they get better. Our work has slowed down some but I think it will get worse if the grian prices keep going up like they are. I can not understand why the goverment is pushing ethanol so much when it has been proven that there is no real future in using it. Our supervisor at work has a E-85 truck and was telling some of us the other day that he is haveing second thoughts about it now. He said that the his gas milage is not as good as a straight gas engine would have been and ethanol has to be 30 cents per gallon cheaper for him to break even. I do not know what it is in other areas but around here ethanol is only about 20 cents cheaper. You might feel better that you are buying local ethanol insted of foreign oil but it is going to cost you extra money to do so. Grain farmers were already getting help from the goverment before the ethanol craze and then they are one of the few groups who have benifited from this as well. Even if they are not really getting ahead at least they are not falling behind as fast as most of the rest of us are. The goverment is asking farmers to plant more land in Corn and Beans for ethanol and bio-diesel and then pouring money into their production just to make it worh wile to produce them. What is going to happen when they decide to pull that this is a no win situation and that they need to pull the plug on the bio-fuel market. What will the farmers do then? is the goverment going to step in and give them more goverment programs to help them out. It is just a matter of time before that happens and that might be the change they are talking about. I think you are right the change so far has not been for the better and it does not look like it will get better any time soon.
JohnL
