Is it a bad idea to fly young birds from different familys together or should i fly them separately? Most of my 08s' are Higgins/Reed,but i have a few Bob Scott birds and a few that are mixed. What can you all tell me about this??

I have had no problem flyng birds from different families together. The futity flies always have birds from 20+ families flying together and they do fine. fly all the youngsters together and pick the best.

It is no problem.

My breeders are all Monty birds eccept for one hen whose mother was a Barrett bird father was a Monty. The young they throw come into the roll quite young like 3 months compared to the pure Montys which come in more like 5 or 6 months or older. When the birds with the Barrett blood come into the roll early like that they sometimes have trouble getting back to the kit quick enough for my liking but after they become more mature and the others are rolling too they smarten up and are good kitters. That's my experience flying the different fams together.

What I did with my 2 different family's of rollers is I first flew them separate to see how high one fly how long how low.and when i saw they fly the same i put them together.and them started separating for my teams when they started coming into the roll.

Luis, fly them together, what conforms to the management works and those that don't just don't.
Some familys can more or less be on the same page while others are like night and day & managment can get difficult.

Just my Opinion

In the UK It is very important to fly a family of birds that are related together. I have tried flying different families of birds years ago just to cause nothing but stress and disappointment. I agree there are certain families that carry the same flying traits but other families over here are totally a world apart.
Some flyers over here have low flying rollers and other high flying rollers some fast flying some slow flying.
Fast wing beat slow wing beat some families need more food than others. I agree some of the above can be controlled by food but you can only do so much with the feed tin.
What we all aim and strive for is rollers that are clones of one and others flying habits and feeding habits this makes a kit a lot easier to manage for a guy starting out within this hobby.
Every successful guy over here that wins competitions on a regular basis fly a tight nit family of birds and is the only way forward in my eyes.
Sometimes i cant understand when i hear guys say like they have like four families of birds and are crossing this to that etc when they would do a lot better if they focused more on a much smaller scale.

I must disagree i dont think you can go wrong if you fly 1 family of birds but i have to say the best kit of birds ive ever had were a right mix bunch and i'd go as far to say they were as good a team ive seen anywere.

Ste
I ain't saying it is not possible to fly a mixed family kit. What i am saying it didn't work for me personally.
I went years with having a mixed bunch there was no chemistry between the kit.
IE breaks would be poor, Individual birds would roll,
Kitting suffered i could go on and on.

Anyway the question was about youngsters and if i was in Luis position i would fly the youngsters together with a bit of luck they might not be too far apart and all will be well.
