A friend of mine has a stud of Russel Harter birds. The pedigree on all the breeders indicates they have dilute in their background. The majority are nice looking birds but some are poor looking specimens. Some have good style and velosity plus plenty of depth for competition flying. The biggest problem is they carry to much dilute therefore this creates poor style and velosity in many of the offspings. The best ones could be used to breed back to dilutes and hope for better quality dilutes. But if the dilute factor isnt any consern to the breeder it would be okay to breed this family. I hope this information is helpfull to anyone interesed in breeding and flying this family. As ever, Ray Sanchez.

Bought some Harters from this guy (Prisco). Never saw a roll from any of those that I bred in 08, but I have been told that they come in late. Also, told that they are primarily 'H' style rollers. Have one hen left due to a stray dog (3) masacre. All were grizzles or dilutes. Had one pure white. Going to breed this hen to Hubbs (FB) and see what comes out. Told that breeding these two produces some good medium high, deep rollers. Not for competition just for personal enjoyment. ---------- scrimpscrampi Tulsa, OK

Bill, Thanks for the info. I will take your advice and be patient with them...Also, you are right in that the Harters are a little silly, but they are the friendliest birds I have ever owned. I had two that would ride on my feet as i walked through the loft...Makes you go ahhhhhhhhhhh! ---------- scrimpscrampi Tulsa, OK

scrimpscrampi,
Yes Sir, they are very good birds. I am glad you appreciate them. They are not spastic nor flaky. ******************************************************* David C,
I am sorry I have no personal knowledge or experience with the Patterson pigeons. So I cannot comment on them.
You did mention if they are related? If you mean the Harter birds and the FB's, absolutely no relation what so ever, between the two families.
Regards, Bill from NJ

Wilwok, You asked if anyone had any information. Then you attack the HELL out of the first guy that answers you. Maybe you should have asked if anyone has any praise and great things to say about the Russ Harter family? LOL I to have seen a couple guys who flew this family. They were mostly dilutes.even had a few yellow grizzles. To be honest, they were sub par rollers compared to the birds being flown in the area. Deep birds with a lot of wing switching. A good work rate, but they were soft in the roll and had poor style. The reason I never flew any myself was because there were much better birds around. Why would I waste my time? SoI never flew any myself. Just wanted to answer that question for you. I already explained why. I'm not saying your Harter birds are like this, yours maybe very good. One thing, the Harter birds I seen came to roll farely early. Not late like you guys are talking. You asked for information Wilwok, there is my experience with the Harter birds. It is more in line with what Crystal Palace has seen. Maybe you should tell him your sorry! JUST MY OPINION and experience. KGB .

Hi all, if anyone is still reading this particular post, I have bred these Harter birds since 1990. My opinion is that the family has degraded significantly since Bob Prisco flew them in the 70's and 80's. Since they were not flown by Charlie Hubbs throughout the 90's and 00's, the family has suffered and lacked control in the air. Yes, dillutes have partially ruined this family of birds. With that said, this family represents the most attractive old-style Birminghams that I have seen. These are like the Ollie Harris type. the originals were compact and the intense birds were the best individual performers I have ever seen. These are fantastic kitting pigeons and work well together. I blame the lack of fly by Charlie Hubbs as the pitfall to this family. Charlie had cataracts and stop flying in 1990. If you breed them, I would outcross these with a more vigorous family to get better results. hope this helps, Doug Pirhalla

It is strange to see this post come around again. In 1957 I received a kit of squeekers directly from Russ. They were really good birds and had the trait of almost "leaping up" into their roll. I guess they would rise a foot or two and then hit a fast sharp spin. I wish I had them back today.

The roll was uniqe with Harter birds. I agree. for what it's worth, Charlie Hubbs from NJ made direct comparisons of Harter birds with the Plona, Smith, and Pensom birds and he always appreciated Harter birds more. he used to tell me details of the better kit performance, and overall fly with the Harter birds. He said the spin was better, more fluid.
I heard of flyers like Dick Davis, Martin, and Voda as having success with this family. It would be interesting to hear of others that still fly them and enjoy them today. I would like to see a family devoted to the Harter blood.
