I Found an article saying that sometimes Coopers Hawks are of the menu of the Great Horned Owl.. They have a European relative, the Eagle Owl that also kills hawks. This is what one site says:
Great horned owls have been called "winged tigers" because of their reported "ferocity" and competency at catching prey (Bent 1938; Voous 1989). They often prey on mammals and birds as large as (and including) skunks, opossums, weasels, crows, ducks, geese, swans, and even Cooper's hawks (Gullion 1947; Voous 1989).

Val, How does that work? Actually there was a lot more to the original article. It was about the eagle owl and had a lot more details. Paul

if you guys want to attract this owls you guys have to make some nest boxes that resemble hollowed tree trunks. very hard to make at first. but they will come. this owls nest as far south as central mexico very abundant in the sonoran desert but lack of nesting sites in the city limits have pushed them to the outskirts of our cities. good luck in attracting this birds best time to attract them is in the winter while they are migrating.

Central, Thanks for the suggestion... But Great Horned Owls don't nest in tree hollows.. other owls do, but they don't. They nest in old abandoned hawk nests, or other such nests.. I found directions on how to build nesting sites for Great Horned Owls..

The Great horned Owl also will prey on red tailed hawks at times. They will, of course, catch and eat pigeons, but usually at dusk or birds that are sitting out at night.. Still, it seems to me that they are more on "our side" than against us.
A picture of one on it's nest... Anyone recognize the feathers of the bird it has caught?
