C Robbo interesting ,I just finish reading a chapter from the book The Aerial Performance of the Birmingham Roller by Cornell L.Norwood, and its says "Qoute" Inbreeding will invite degeneration.Degeneration is literally defined as a return to a natural state.usually one of a lower order..
So I bet breeders that inbreed a lot have birds that pop up with these traits but don't say nothing about it.hmmm you never know what goes on behind close doors.. so I think your opinion might be right on the money..thats just my opinion.. ---------- Ralph....

Wow Robbo, You meen to tell me they have crest rollers in England? We have guys here in the USA that know it all, theyve been telling me that the crest was somthing we made here by crossing, thank you. these guys are so good they can tell a bird by the picture LOL. I alway said it was from inbreeding, Post some pictures if you can . thanks Hector Coya

I don't think so! I have inbred 10 generations of full brother and sister.. I got some weak birds vigor wise, but no crest, front of back. No fan tails or Milky Mookies.. I think maybe if you inbreed certian birds carrying these traits you will surely increase your chances of making more. Inbreeding doesn't cause anything, it only uncovers what has been hidden within any strain.. Inbreeding is not the cause, it is the uncover!!! Just my opinion,, KGB

Ill give you my opinion,In 1982,one of my first birds from Bob Scott, started producing double toes in the back of theree feet, both feet.,insted of one toe, did you ever see that? i had about 7 out of this pair,i finalyy broke them up and i never saw it again, it was something that brought it out when they where mated together.neither bird produced 2 toes ever again. that was inbreeding.Hector Coya

Hector, with in my family, You can't mate a pair that you would not consider inbred or highly line bred.. I mean even if you go back generations you will find the same birds used again and again. I do have a recessive gene that pops up for web toes. If your birds have a recessive gene for two back toes and you mate two of them together, you will get two back toes I guess.. If you have birds that have crested rollers with tuffs in the front in the background, when you mate a pairing up both carrying that gene, you will get them I suspect. None of the Birmingham rollers I have been around seam to carry these genes. I can't figure out how they seam to always pop up in the same area's and in the lofts of those who are looking for them. It's the same with dilute or Yellow. Guys will try to say they got a yellow off my birds but when you get to talking to them, they have had yellows and bred them in their lofts for years. They are looking for yellows. So they get your birds in a year or two, they are breeding yellows out of your birds and they just popped up pure, out of your family! Sure they did! LOL Hector, I will let you come over here, look at the peds to see who is the most inbred, mate them up, and I can a assure you, no crest, odd rare colors, or other traits from other breeds. These birds have been bred as Birmingham rollers long enough, that those traits from other breeds just don't pop up. No matter what you do, inbreeding will not create a new trait, it will only uncover the traits the lie dormant within your family. Inbreeding doesn't create, it uncovers traits that have been swept under the carpet by those who cross and create. Inbreeding is a way to purify, select out and do away with bad traits. It is not the road to creating new traits. Those come from add other breeds and Traits,, then when you find them, inbreed and line breed for those traits that have been added.. If added then buried, it may pop up one day if a guy starts to inbreed. Not because of the inbreeding, but because of the cross or trait that was buried in the line. Inbreeding just uncovers that trait and then some guys think it was created or mutated. It was just a latent recessive trait waiting to be uncovered, not created! OK, I've said this enough ways! lol Thanks for the Chat Hector.. Remember you never have to agree with me to be my friend. We all have opinions. I have just shared mine with you. You shared yours with me. It just makes for good discussion. Thanks for the Chat.. KGB

I agree with you Kenny,Its not that the crest poped up at my loft,i acuired them from where ever i heard someone had one,ill tell you theres a few back east that got crest they just dont want to ship them or i whould have got them. Its just a little somthing to play with,im not going to put crest to my Bob scott birds,Bob whould roll over in his grave,LOL, He whould shit if he knew i even had them . The once i got i never questioned the person,i took their word, thats all i could do. but i did fly them, and they did roll to my saticefaction so i think thats all that matters. Chat with you later Kenny. Hector Coya

Funny thing here with pigeons... It seems that the original wild birds didn't have unusual colors, or muffs of crests..they didn't roll on the ground or in the air. They didn't blow up their crops the size of a grapefruit or have curly feathers on their backs. They didn't have fantails, or hoods around their heads. No short tiny little beaks or extreme eye cere. They didn't have long stilt legs nor could they race back 2,000 miles like todays homers. So why is it that every time something a little different shows up, to whatever undeveloped degree, it has to have come as result of some sort of unwholesome activity? Obviously, there will always be breeders who will key on some unusual trait and try to take it to another level. That is just the nature of curiosity and creativity. That is how there got to be so many strange and unusual breeds of pigeons in the first place. Gomez

Hi Hector...
A very good friend of mines in Baltimore, Maryland was asking about some yellows pictured on Fernando's Built 4 Speed website. He thinks that us Northern California flyers know a lot about Southern California flyers birds (their business). I try to explan to him that its not even like that. Heck, I don't even know most of the Northern California flyers.
...well anyway
Can you tell me about these birds that Fernando says produce 40ft to 60ft rollers. deepspinners@usa.com
NOTE: Since you are the president of SGVS your word is as good as GOLD with me.

Paul why is it that none of these breeders that Breed for some weird trait never fly a kit off thier oddball birds in a comp. and show the World that thier creation is worthy of being called a Roller ?
What I see is that some will fly 17 or 18 regular rollers and 1 or 2 oddball birds and when they score some points they say that was some crested muffs or Huge muffs or some Milky's or toy stencils , when in reality there was 1 or two oddballs in the kit.
And thats only if they Fly , which most Guys that have Oddball Birds usually never do .
Like Nick said , how about respecting the Breed for what it is instead of perpertrating a Fault or crossing them to another Breed to get some freaky Bird .

George I flew the W/C and F/F pree, 2 years ago ,and did ok. 288,and 198,i think i cant remember, i had 3 crest,2 andelucians,10 Bob Scott, and 5 Norm Reed's.I think if i had only 1 Crest in there it must be becouse it earned its spot in that team,i had 3 kits, oviously those 3 crest where part of my best 20 that week. If im going to fly comp,im going to put my best 20 whouldnt you? So if 3 are oddballs,If they roll whats the diference. Hector Coya

like I said I have never seen or heard of a whole Kit of Oddballs .
when I had homers I once had a homer get out while my kit was flying and the Homer went into the kit and that did not stop the kit from rolling.
of course the Homer did not roll but he flew with the kit .
if I would have been in a kit comp could I have said I flew some homer(s).

George you could had said that but everyone know homers don't roll. but these oddballs like you call them are rolling but like you said if two or three are in there and you say the whole team is made up of them, its a lie ,but the truth will come out when they all land.. ---------- Ralph....

I would like to see a whole kit of crested muff rollers or x tra large muffs or a whole kit of toy stencils fly as a kit.
I dont think that will ever happen. A person would have to breed 500 of them Birds to get a kit of 20 that could fly .

Efren, That bird looked like yellow.. but wasn't really... had some gray smudging on it's back, etc. When I went out to see the Classic birds, Chuck Zeller, who was the loft manager was showing them to me and not knowing who bred the bird said, "Would you believe that somebody entered a yellow in this competition?" He thought it was funny..!! I told him that it was mine. Of course he was embarrased. We then handled the bird and took a good look at it. I think he could see that she saw very strong and had a hell of an eye. Looks like she might have been the "rollinest" bird in the competition.. Just didn't kit well.. Gomez
