Thats just one of the perils of early breeding. It does happen from time to time. Just think, before long it will be warm weather and you wont have to worry about that no more.

Keep your head up. SPRING IS COMING !!!!!!!!!
Like the song said, " keep on keeping on"

Bertie,
Sometimes the young breeders might not sit on the babies at night. You should have only mated pairs of breeders in your breeding pen if you have an open loft, because the odd birds can cause trouble. Also something could have scared them off their nest and caused nthem not to cover the babies.

Don't know how cold it got, or if that is what happened, but it seemed like the few that I lost to the cold, were about that 5-9 day range! They start getting to big to cover and they just starting to get their pin feathers! The first few days I wouldn't worry cause the parents set tight, and as soon as I saw them getting feather coverage they seemed to be pretty resistant to the cold! It was the inbetween time that seemed to get them for me!

When I knew there was a real cold night coming and had some that were at this critical age, I have had success by putting an air activated hand warmer about an inch under the nesting material and gave them extra warmth! I get mine at Wal Mart for about a dollar apiece!

Hey Val, I had a single chick just starting to pin out.The cock started driving the hen for a second round. The squab was chilled when I found him so I used your idea and threw a hand warmer in under a nest liner. Well a couple of hours later he had his shades and sun-block and a big smile on his face.LOL
Seriously worked great.Thanks----------

At this time of early breeding season, I suggest you use a heating lamp in the breeding section…that if you have electric connected to your coop. if you don’t have electric connection, I would suggest to do it this summer since the effort and the cost is minimal. Heating lamb generates heat and keeps the area warm. You can use the 125W bulb instead of the normal 250W to save on electricity. But for a month or two, the cost of extra electricity is negligible. Good luck.

Bert,
Do you keep a light on in the loft with your breeders? Or turn a light on to give them more daylight hours? If you use a light for added daylight it's better to have the light on a timer. Set the timer to come on a couple hours or so before daylight, and to go off after it's already daylight. This way the parents will cover the young when they sence the light fading, and you won't accidentaly catch the parents off the nest when turning the lights off.

It works for me!
