I am not a raptor specialist so can someone explain the process of B.O.P. migratory. Imagine 50 states...If (A) is located in Texas and his B.O.P migrate, to which point will the bop's stop? Do they go north, south, east, or west. If (B) lives in West Virginia and his BOP's migrate, where do they go? If (C) lives in Sacramento, CA, where do his BOPS migrate to. DO they all actually go settle in an island reserved for them or do they just stop to the nearest neighboring state. If so, then we will never be BOP free because when my BOP moves out of my state, someone else's BOP will come straight to my state.

Do they attack less when they are sitting on eggs as there is 1 BOP compared to a pair?

just trying to straighten some reason for migratory.

thanks.

Hi Flo i just was thinking the same question i asked they guys on chat and they told me they go North to Canada areas to migrate. Does that mean Canadian flyers get hammered with the bop resulting in lock down at this time of the year?

Here in Houston... raptors begin showing up mid-October
and begin leaving mid-March... by 1st of April most have migrated through. Some stay, of course, but losses
really go down after April.

When they migrate, they head to South America and back through their migratory path which is through Florida heading toward the northern States and other western states of North America such as Texas and Arizona heading toward California and western states. However, during the spring and summer months, song birds migrate also and the hawks follow them so that they can also start their nesting while the supply of food is abundant. Once the song birds migrate back to the prospective states, they become hawks bait. Hawks will go after song birds such as Robins for example since they are easy catch. They also rob their nests in the trees. During this time of plentiful, hawk attacks on pigeons diminishes since they are no longer hungry and there is much easier way to catch their pray without the hustle. However, it is a different story with falcons since they are programmed to catch their pray in the air where they do their most damage due to their sheer speed. Their preferred food is pigeons and they don’t fly from tree to tree like hawks and eating the nestlings of other birds.

Senor Gomez,
The map you posted does not show any significant migrations of the henerys on the west coast,so are the scientists saying they are mostly permanent residents?

I was wondering the same thing as Kelly! There is obviously huge amounts of peris in Cali! Why are we not seeing migration activity there?

I never wished BOP'S on anyone. Fact is, I don't think there is going to be a day when we are all BOP's free anywhere soon. I was only joking about Canada so brighten up Santandercol. NO Karmas on no one. just wish they can all go play with the penguins in Antarctica but that is just my imagination.

Kel (Santandercol),
It does seem like the Peregrines in Calif. must stay here. From what I've seen they were down to maybe as low as 2 breeding pairs in 1970. Then they were reintroduced.. over 700 were released in California.. In August 1999 they were taken off the endangered list.
Now there appear to be in excess of 1,500 in Caslif, including over 300 breeding pairs.... Probably more because my numbers are at least two years old...

Migrating hawks follow well defined routes as they move to their southern homes. Most hawks are soaring birds that depend on updrafts to help them travel. They do not like to cross large bodies of water where there are no updrafts. Instead, they will follow a land routes and shorelines to navigate around large bodies of water. For this reason, certain geographical locations become concentration spots where hawks gather prior to crossing a narrow stretch of water.
