Just because the bird you have performs backward sumersaults at a high velocity for seral yards looking like a ball does not say that it is a Birmingham Roller.

Do mongrals compete in the World Cup and the NBRC Fall Fly? Yes

Do they compete well? Yes

Should they be allowed to compete in these competitions? Yes, because there would be no way to police it.

Breed: a relatively homogenous group of animals within a species, developed and maintained by humans

Homogenous: corresponding in structure because of a common origin.

That should explain it all.

Ty,

I'll save you some time. This is called "bating". I'm guilty of taking it just by replying now. There is, however, some positives that come of it as long as you don't get your personal feelings involved. But if you do...whoa buddy...get your shoes on!!! It's a long song to dance to.

Eric -

I would not call it "baiting". It is an accumulation of things after reading several posts on this forum. Many are looking at the words "Birmingham Roller" as just a description of performance. This was my response to what I have been reading. KGB hit on it on another threat on this forum, but he did in a series of sarcastic statements and it went right over several people's heads. I just wanted to say something that would not be considered an opinion, especially not my opinion.

Jerry,

I hope to be in Missouri for the World Cup. If would be a good time to visit those NBRC members in Region 5. I have a mailer that I am sending in the next couple of days.

I am judging in the WC in the Southern part of AR; all of Mississippi; and all of Louisianna. It is a new region of the WC and they have 16 flyers set up. So, that may conflict with the region I fly in. Have to wait and see.

I am not going to win the WC that is for sure, but they are getting better as the days move on. I may surprise myself. Let me know how your birds progress after you start. Don't get too disappointed when you liberate them for the first time.........(LOL)

It's a drive-by-post but not a shooting. My point is the very definition of a breed proves the Birmingham Roller is a distinct breed of Pigeon. It can't be defined by a descriptive action alone. If so, the Oriental Roller would be a Birmingham Roller too because it performs in the same descriptive manner. The key word in the definition of a breed is "homogenous" which means they correspond in structure because of a common origin. I do believe all Birmingham Rollers trace their common origin back to Birmingham England and that's part of what qualifies this group of Pigeons as Birmingham Rollers.

Then again going back to the origins of the Birmingham Roller, it was a mongrel. Composed of Oriental, Dutch Tumbler and a few other breeds that were blended together by the use of selective breeding and strict animal husbandry. The origins of the bird give us the range of colors, modifiers and characteristics that give us the amazing little guy we know as the Birmingham Roller.

Alan , but can orientals actualy do what a non cull Birmingham can ? talking about rolling correctly here, that is a question as I don't have any experiance with them, but they don't look like they are built right.

Kenny, what breed of anything wasn't developed with other breeds until established as it's own breed ?
There is so much more to the Birmingham than just spinning.
It's entire makeup evolves around what it takes physicaly and mentally handle what it is breed to do year after yea. That is the tricky part whether you stay in the breed or or cross breed into it with another, and that is where many fall short, birds that are controled by the roll are easy to breed.

Scott, no they can't because they are two separate breeds bred to do different things... From looking at the performance of the best Birmingham Roller in the world from strictly an Oriental Roller mindset, the best Birmingham in the world is a cull. From only a Birmingham Roller mindset, the best Oriental is a cull. Why? Because they are two separate breeds. They have two different standards for performance.

But that's not the point of this topic. The point is if the definition of a Birmingham Roller is one to spin fast and straight like a ball for a long distance, that is one of the performances in the Oriental's back of tricks but they are not Birmingham Rollers.

Yes, and I might add that every domestic breed of animal started out as a mongrel. Breed and species have two seperate definitions.

I guess we are all mongrels of our own kind (human beings that is). Through time, we chose different mates, produces some more human and they mate with other humans. Some chose their kind (ethnicity) and other decides to choose a different ethnicity. To say we are all pure (one kind of race may not be true). there will be a slight percentage that there is a different race within our blood. This is the reason we adapt to change. We all become smarter in one way or the other. We develope strengths of one origin and make us stronger where we use to be weak. The only difference with humans and rollers is; as human, we get to decide who we pair up (other culture may be different...but in the USA...this seems to be the case) and as rollers, it is their master trainer who decides who their mate should be. Point is, every living species is scientificly mongrels.
