Well trained, as they should be! Also they look forward to the flying, I'll bet they group around the door waiting for you to open it, prancing, and nervous ready to take to the wing.
It's grand ain't it! Thom

I keep a red flag stick handy. I dont use it often but for young birds that dont want to fly for more than a minute or 5, I`ll flag them up every time they land. I force them to work. I try to get 20 to 30 minutes. If they come down early they dont get no feed. they get the stick.
Spare the rod,... Spoil the bird...so to speak. There is no reward for coming down early in my yard. Unless it is in the first week or two of flying. After that, they have to earn their keep. I very rarely have a bird land early.
I`ve only DQd 1 time in comp, and that was after flying 10 minutes after returning from a week long trip. Birds landed at 14 min. 55 sec. I later found out that their caregiver fed them right but they had no water. I dont know for how long. Lessons learned the hard way are easily remembered...LOL ---------- Butch @ Sundance Roller Lofts

The first week or so, I just open the door and let them find their own way. After they get a few days under their wing they seem to want out on their own. Once in a blue moon I might flag them out, like if I`m flying them a couple times in the same day, but even that is rare.
I dont like to scare them out of their "happy place" ---------- Butch @ Sundance Roller Lofts

My birds are hyper, they would just fly out of the kit, just like that and up to the sky. I use to fly a kite to make them fly, but that was before with my former birds. This is Now, I don't flag anymore because they are scared the heck out of it. Sometime they would stay on the roof longer then I think. ---------- W.Cha

I'll flag them out some times. Weather, flying them twice or more, etc.
It is pretty routine for the birds to hit the air when you open the door. All tho some times they just need a little encouragement.
I have found that in my family of birds - the ones that don't want to hit the sky coming out of the kit box will usually roll down or become mad bumpers later in their development. Fly out and land right a way on the roof. Even tho I know this, I still give every bird a chance to develop. Man, what a sucker I am.

Thor, You might be a softie, I'll bet you are in good company. I think most despite what they might say will give every bird a fair chance. Pull the trigger to soon, shoot yourself in the foot!! Once broken, never mended. I'm out of clich'e's but I made my point.

MIne have learned that If I dont open the door and step back, they arent sposed to fly. They usually just mill around looking for the treat bowl if I dont have the feeder in my hands. They leave in three groups. The first 8-10 are usually waiting to fly, boom they are gone. 20 seconds later 7-8 more take off. I have 3-4 that are always laggards and I get tired of waiting on them,I flag them up.

Since i only have 2 kitboxes and sometimes different age groups in the kits,i end up tossing them up by hand making sure the younger ones stay in the box.Once all are on the same page, i flag them out of the kitbox.Hoping to eventually get 2 more kitboxes of smaller size.My current 2 kitboxes hold 40 birds each with room to spare!

I haven't been using anything lately but I usually use a 4' stick and hit the floor of the kit box to get them all out. ---------- Efren Lopez SGVS

Hey Ralph,
When I open the door, the comp kit usually will take right off like a shot, but I do try to chase them up after they take to the air because I want them to elevate as soon as possible. This quick elevation is good for a couple reasons: it keeps any deep birds from making a mistake bumping into a tree or the house, it keeps any hidden Coopers Hawks from having any easy shot at them, and in competition, it gets the birds up at a good scoreable height quickly so that I can call time-in sooner thereby keeping them from losing those early breaks.(Hey, I want every possible scoreable break possible! LOL)
How are those Szabatura birds doing, Ralph? Have you got any youngsters working out of them yet?

Dave, All good reasons for flagging 'em up.Short pole to start then graduate to the 20ft 3/4" PVC pipe with the plastic bag on the end for any roof sitters. That's the thing about training these suckkers ya gotta be prepared to use all your resources, feed can, dark kitboxes, flag, tennis ball on casting rod, carry crate to take 'em down the street aways, signals to come in.All great management tools. ---------- Kel. Dave, my next door neighbors grand kid went to my cage where i kept the black and white 06/601 cock...and 06/631red white flight Hen .there was a partition between them so that they could mate up.well she let the cock out and since its the first time out flying and excitement it roll down on my roof and kill itself, I was so piss i love the look of that bird ..so i decided to fly the hen since i don't have anything to make on it.she is doing only a few flips ...now 07/774 Wht grizzle man that bird can roll smooth clean fast 20 to 25 feet ,great temperament, good kit bird.never bump coming out or in,roll once to twice a minute. out of all these birds this is the one i like..started at three month, the other ones started at 5 month ,the red baldy is starting to flip now .and the #773 red grizzle.all the other one are doing 10 to 15.I like this family because they have control of the roll not being control by the roll.. so far i have been lucky with them with the BOP..like i said to to you once I need to fly my birds before mating them.but it is a stable family showing so far..but i hurt losing the black and white cock #601...I will keep you inform as they progress..Thx. your friend in the game ---------- Ralph....

Hey Ralph,
Here is a picture of one of the best birds that I bred last year, she's a full sister to your 774. Their parents have been producing the goods for me, so keep an eye on that 774. I'm sorry to hear about you losing that cock bird, hopefully you'll get a good cock bird out of the rest of those birds.

Ralph,
Below is a picture of the parents to your 744 and the hen that I posted above.
You asked about FLRC, it stands for Finger Lakes Roller Club. The Smith in the pedigrees is Steve Smith of Campbell, NY, not the Steve Smith on this site. Most of my birds go back to Steve. He has a nice inbred family that he has worked for over 30 years. There is nothing on my pedigree beyond the Kumro bird because I got that bird directly from Ron Kumro, so she is not in my pedigree program. I do have a written pedigree on her from Ron.

Hey Dave thnnks for posting the parents to that white grizle. I like then both but that white sure looks nice,, what was that you saw in these two particular birds that made you pair them up..
Was the mating base on the cock or hen,I mean was you looking to bank off the cock or hen in your decision to stock them . ---------- Ralph....

Hey lil ric, what's up bro? You saw that little white hen in my convention kit. She was the deep balled up white bird in the kit. I'll tell Ivan that you said hi. See you in Dallas! Dave

Hey Ralph,
You need to post a better picture of that 744 bird, you're making my birds look bad! LOL. As to my selection thoughts for that pair, these two matched up well as far as performance goes, they were both balled up fast spinners, and they were both deep although the hen was a little deeper. They compliment each other in body type, with the cock having a better type in my opinion. The cock is my base family, and the hen is out of my Kumro cross birds that I am trying to see if they can add anything to my base family. The white hen is the best that I bred out of my Kumro hen.

lol'''I said it wasn't a good pic but i try to get a better one and post it on here. Very interesting in your thoughts in breeding these two rollers of yours. The reason why I ask was because i hear a lot of why rollers are put together as in because one lack something and another has what he lacks and in hoping that the offspring would come out with whats lacking. Example; This hen rolls deep 30 + this cock roll 10 ft if by mating this two maybe i get the next generation deeper like the hen,to me that's like a double edge sword.you might just get all of them short spinners , but unlike in your case they were matched up well as far as performance goes they complimented each other in body type.they both had the goods .You were keeping the gold in one pot not trading it in for nothing.I rather go in that direction than a hit and miss.I mean every one has culls but you taking a step forward instead of taking a step backwards in your breeding program . and thats what I'm talking about.. ---------- Ralph....
