Has it finally happened? Our worst fears come to pass? A child out enjoying and touring Boston's Fenway Park, where baseball, America's favorite pastime is played is attacked from behind by a bop?!

According to the news article, the girl who was attacked was taken to the hospital by ambulance bleeding from the brow.

Apparently, the bop was allowed to nest amongst the rafters of the ballpark. First we hear about a small dog taken, now a child has been attacked?

Where is this all leading? The roller pigeon community was recently the target of an undercover sting operation and hit hard by the authorities, does it follow then that some of their warnings of over population might be taken a little more seriously now?

It is very alarming to me, as a grandfather and the publisher of Roller-Pigeon.Com that now, apparently some bop, in order to protect their territory and nesting areas have begun to lose their fear of humans and are now capable of attacking children?

It will be interesting to see which animal rights groups and appropriate governmental authorities will stand up to speak for this child and take the necessary steps to protect our children in the future!

I'm sure this has happened before. But looks like it made the news this time. I have personally seen the change in their behavior as they do not fear people. In many occasions I have had to get out of the way when they are chasing my birds. I hope something is done to relocate them in over populated areas, like my area…

Protection of the young is a natural instinct amongst wild animals and even some domesticated ones.

Hmm.... let's see here.

I got it!

The only resolution in this particular incident is to trap the BOP and move it to a new location where it will be less hostile.... or shall I say not a "THREAT" to human beings.

I totally agree with the comments about not being afraid of humans....look at what happened to the bears at yellowstone...they had to start moving them...they have even killed some of the bears for being to close to humans. What happens when a mountain lion attacks a human....bye bye mountain lion.

Well....I know what will be said....that bird is just protecting its nest....what the hell is it nesting at ball park...why...because all the other "wild" territory is already taken by over population.

I had a cooper go after me before.....it followed me to the loft hovering over my head....I ended up hitting it with a broom and it when flying when I hit it......then flew off.....I sure as hell do not look like a pigeon..LOL....

Hey...I love wildlife.....but overpopulation is worse then anything...that is why we hunt deer and elk etc...because of the population.....it is worse having an animal starve to death because of over population. Anyway....my two cents....and I am with one of the posts....something attacks my kids.....I don't care if it is protected or not.....That is a dead critter......

Not only is it the claws it uses as a weapons it also uses the shock of the blow it deal when it hits it victim. Do the math. 2 lb bird moving at say 50 MPH. Get hit with a water bottle thrown from a car moving 50 mph bout the same difference

I have already posted this story before but I had an incident several years ago with a Coopers almost hitting me in the chest. I was at the kit box and birds were landing when a BOP hit the kit. I watched the BOP chase a bird behind the kit box so I ran around the corner of the kit box and when I did there it was coming at me, chest high with its' talons outstretched. That BOP got within 3 feet of hitiing me and scared the crap out of me!
fhtfire, I am convinced the BOP situation will correct itself through a epidemic. Food and habitat will continue to get more scarce and the stress on the birds will lower their immunity enough for a common bacteria to take off and wipe out most of the population. Look at what happens when you over populate a loft. Hard to believe the Govt. is paying folks in lab coats with PhD's when they can't figure out what the average pigeon fancier learns their first year in the hobby!

OK,
Its been a long time since I have posted but on this tread
I have to participate.
I feel the protectors of this vicious raptor should be held
responsible.
Ultametly it is the FWS and the Migratory Act that protects them.
A legal motion should be filed on both FWS and Finway.
If a lawsuit is filed on the ball park for letting it nest there to attack someone and it is put before a jury of people that are not peta members then justice will prevail.
We all know Ball Parks are big money and Money talks.
Insurance companies change laws.
I hope this girl or her parents a apprised of this fact.

PR rollers, I won't say the BOP was attacking me but I will say that because it lost its' fear of humans it almost got itself in a bad situation. Read the article that Tony linked to his post and you get the sense that the incident wasn't taken seriously. Like every other man vs animal story, it won't be taken seriously until humans start getting seriously maimed or killed.

I think it was a bad idea to let the hawks nest in a public stadium. I've been kind of quiet about this one tho... because the Great horned owls are supposed to be even more protective of their nests..
I wonder what triggered the attack..? What was the hawk looking at. I wonder if it had shown signs of aggression before?
In India people have to live in the same areas as tigers... I wonder what that's like..

I agree with you Ralph, (Moderated) sounds like a FWS agent to me. You would think on a roller forum a person would lean a bit more toward the wrong on a hawk attack but (Moderated) keeps protecting it even though it obviously attached a little girl. I wonder if he would feel the same if that was his little girl. I know I would be very upset and do whatever it takes to protect my kids. In no way is a hawks life more than a human life.

(Moderated) you stated that this is no surprise that when you get close to a hawks nest it will swoop down and try scaring you away. Now, I seen the video and I don’t think 30’ + away from the nest is getting close to the nest. Also the little girl was at the very bottom of that row, why not someone who was much closer? Was it because they were much bigger? Now in regards to you saying the hawk tried to scare her away, I don’t think when a hawk is leaving with a patch of your hair and has left you bleeding that it’s consider scaring you… it’s called being attacked. Like when a pit bull attacks you, it leaves you bleeding, this hawk attacked and left this poor little innocent girl bleeding. I hope her parents sue the crap out of Fenway park as well as the government for allowing this type of incidents to happen. The government if fully aware of the over population of Bop’s, why else would they built a nest in an area with high traffic and noise? I guess the other areas to nest were already taken.

You keep trying to compare a bop with a pigeon or a parrot. In no way are they alike. A pigeon doesn’t hunt to kill or attack humans. I have never heard of a parrot doing this either. A bop is not a domestic animal, so please stop trying to say these are the same. I wouldn’t wear a thick leather glove to check my pigeons eggs, I wonder if you would wear one to just get close to a bop.

And now to finish by saying “God made YOUR pigeons food for hawks I didn’t” made me think, that I hoped you kept your word when you stated “ this would be my last post”. Obviously you don’t consider yourself a rollerman by saying things like this on a Roller forum. I felt offended by what you said to my good friend to cuss out God? (God made some birds predators, so Ralph if you want to cuss someone out cuss out the one that made the bop’s). What type of individual would say something like this? Maybe you should take time to look at the posting policy’s, or better yet avoid making post like this.

As it turns out the hawk had attacked a photographer on Wednesday. Fenway Park could have avoided the attack on the girl if only they had removed the nest after the first attack!

http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2008/04/03/demars.woman.bites.dog.kare

this woman took her chances with the pitbull and she won. I'd rather take my chances with a dog than searching for my eyebulb not knowing it's in the talon of a BOP. Then again, the percentage of getting attack by a BOP is far lower than that of a Pitbull. But when the situation arrives, I think one has a better chance defending themself from a pit than not knowing where the BOP may attack from. Just my opinion...hope that little girl recovers and...yeah..I see Fenway about to send out a big fat check to someone pretty soon....

Hey All, let's keep this thread focused on the fact that a hawk committed an unprovoked attack an innocent girl because no one did anything about the wild animal predator that has been nesting in an environment used by the public.

I would like to have all the links and references to this story that you can find. Please send them using this CONTACT US LINK.

Tony, some time back I wrote about an old timer,I was acquainted with, he went to his rather large loft one morning and stepped inside, and started down the isle, and out of nowhere he got hit in the face and went down,,he was bleeding pretty bad, when he finally got turned around he saw it was a hawk, the door had shut and the hawk was too late so he belonged to the old timer, his forehead was ripped to the bone just that fast,we were thankful it didnt get an eye or even both eyes ..Its scary to think about, but the hawk had trapped chasing a roller, and stayed the night, till old Charlie opened the door,it left scars on his forehead, I guess people dont realize it, but little babys would be in danger out in the open an left alone for a minute...119

Honestly , this was nothing but a fluke, the bird was most likely just protecting the nest and nothing more, the real problem is the animal rights whacko's that would scream to the top of thier lungs if the nest was destroyed when first noticed.
